Maxine Hicks

of Harrison, AR

February 16, 1945 - April 12, 2022

Maxine Hicks, 77, of Harrison, Arkansas. (2/16/1945-4/12/2022) Maxine was the fourth daughter to Bert and Xenia Criner, who were blessed with eight children to raise on a remote hillside in Arkansas.

She grew up going to church, playing basketball, and enjoying time with her large family. Maxine graduated from Mountain Judea High School and moved to Kansas City where she worked at the Valomilk candy factory and learned to drive a stick shift car. Before long, though, she moved back to Arkansas, married George Hicks, and started a family of her own. They met in a bar, but everyone who knew Maxine understands that she was only there for the dancing! She was a cherished wife, a loving mother, and an enthusiastic member of her church. Faith Assembly of God was her church home for many years, and then she found a church family with Real Ministries. Before she retired, she worked at Duncan Industries and was a member of the IAM Machinists union. She and George took great pride in their home, which he designed and built and she decorated with antiques and handcrafted items.

Months and months were spent traveling back roads to collect giant stones to create beautiful and unique floors and walls for the home. But even more, care went into filling the home with love and memories. Maxine enjoyed welcoming her brothers and sisters and in-laws into her home for holidays and visits. She also loved to travel. One of her favorite memories was her trip to Israel where she placed prayers for all of her loved ones on the Wailing Wall. Her faith grew stronger and stronger in her later years. Her earlier hobbies of gardening and yard work were eventually replaced with quieter reflection and reading her bible. She spent her final year as a resident of the Langford Assisted Living Home in Fayetteville where she enjoyed visiting with her new friends, attending bible study, playing bingo, and playing with her "grand-dog", Moritzio. Through years of health struggles, she would always remind you that she believed in healing and the will of God. It brings her family great comfort to know that her faith in God's grace carries her to her heavenly home.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husband George, and her son Greg, as well as her sister Gwen. She is survived by her children, GB Hicks (Kristen) of Harrison and Misty Morgan Hicks of Fayetteville; her three grandchildren, Benjamin, Jonathan, and Nathaniel; her brothers, Aubrey, Eddie, and Danny and her sisters, Katherine, Betty, and Peggy; her brother and sister and law, Howard and Gloria Hicks and a large family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

Visitation was held on Friday, April 15th, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home in Harrison.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 16th, at 10:00 AM, at the same location with Pastors Eric Goff and Arlis Thrasher officiating.

Burial followed at Western Grove Cemetery.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Willard Walker Hospice Care Home in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

I feel so sad. Maxine and I go back a long ways in our life. When we were very young we were the best of friends and even though our lives went in separate ways, we always still had the love for each other. It was always like a reunion when we would meet. Five years ago April 17th my mother Donna passed away and I was in the flower shop getting flowers for my mother. Maxine came in and I was so glad to see her. She insisted on me picking out an Angel for my mom. At the funeral home was that Angel. I have named her Maxine. I called Maxine last fall, and she had moved closer to be near her daughter, and we had a wonderful time talking. I will always cherish the memories we had together. Looking for that great reunion one day with our Lord Jesus Christ.

I didn't know Miss Maxine, but I know well the legacy she has left in her daughter Morgan, one of the shining lights of the Northwest Arkansas theater community and an all-around wonderful human being. That tells me that Miss Maxine was also wonderful and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Please accept my condolences.
