Joyce Maxine Horn Rains

of Harrison, AR

October 1, 1933 - February 28, 2022

Joyce Maxine Horn Rains went to be with the Lord on February 28, 2022, surrounded by her family, Buddy by her side, and Alan Jackson singing, ''In the Garden.'' She was born on October 1, 1933, in Harrison, to Columbus and Faye (Williams) Lewis. She spent most of her childhood in Capps with her parents and three siblings. At sixteen, she married Upton Horn. Together they raised four children and were married 34 years, only at death did they part.

For years she worked outside the home, but her greatest work was making her home a wonderful place for her family and friends. She spent many hours making their family home spotless, cooking homemade meals, and welcoming others to play cards, listen to music, or eat hand-churned ice cream. She was kind, loving, and giving to many in her life. She was a member of Elmwood Baptist Church. She loved the Lord, had great faith, and a hope that others would know him too.

Joyce enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow, eating at tea rooms, and drinking McDonald's coffee. She also enjoyed Christmas Eve family celebrations, large family Thanksgivings, and celebrating birthdays by always making her children a cake. She was a wonderful cook and a master at making homemade soups, flakey pie crusts, cranberry relish, and potato candy. She loved traveling with her family and made several mission trips with her church. She enjoyed sewing and reading, especially books on the Amish. She loved singing in the choir and singing specials with her sister. She taught herself to play the piano by ear and loved playing and singing old hymns. She loved Jeopardy and her family knew not to call while it was on.

Joyce was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, niece, and grandmother to eight, great-grandmother to seventeen, and great-great-grandmother to six.

In 1995, she married Mitchell Rains. They enjoyed 26 years together. She added three children, ten grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren to her heart with this union.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, Columbus and Faye Lewis; her husband and father of her children, Upton Horn; a son-in-law, Don Austin; a special aunt and uncle, Opal and Floyd Birchfield; and her beloved, Toby.

She is survived by her son, Steve Horn and his family Jamie (Christy), Kamey and Kaden Horn, Kelsey (Hayden), and Bo Alsup; her daughter, Brenda Horn Austin and her family Gabe and Stephen Austin, Elizabeth Austin, John (Cherokee) and Katy Austin, Brylie and Jacob Aldama, Charlye and Graham Bohannan; her son, Mickey (Ann) Horn and his family Michael, Lane and Matt Horn, Jessica Horn- Clanton, Jayce, Morgan, Avird and Evandar Clanton, Jericho(Brady) Ziemmer, Nina and Jael Ramsey; Tiffany Horn, Caleb and Lucas Brumley; Sarah and Jonathan; her daughter, Lisa Horn Dixon and her family Justin, Jenny, August and Arlow Dillon and Mia Shirley; her husband, Mitchell Rains and his family Rex (Laura), Kyle (Mabel), Boaz, Jonas and Elias Rains, Jana (Mike), Ellie and Holden Grey, Chelsea (Ben) and Eloise Griffen and Nathan and Nate Petersburg; Ruth (Michael) Crouch, Aaron (Layla), Kefa and Milo Crouch, Landen (Jessica), Jasen, Madelyn, and Westyn Crouch; Rhonda (Rob) Matthews, Sarah Leal, Samuel Searcy, Silas Leal, Jarid (Tori), Marley, Lily, Eliza Matthews, Michael and Madison Evert, and Andrew Matthews. Her siblings Sam (Wanda) Lewis, Glenda Sue (David) Ruble, Billy Ray (Judy) Lewis and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and her fur baby, Buddy.

The family is thankful for the wonderful care she was given by Brittany, Crystal, Maddie, Rhonda, and ''her girl'' Jael. The family would also like to thank Brittany and Taner from Elite Hospice.

She was a Christian and wanted others to follow Him too. She prayed for her family and left us this written prayer, ''I pray for all my family today. Keep them safe. Also, I pray that they all will accept You as their Lord and Savior.''

Pallbearers will be Jamie Horn, Gabe Austin, Elizabeth Austin, John Austin, Michael Horn, Jessica Horn-Clanton, Tiffany Horn, and Justin Dillon.

My condolences to the whole family! I was so sad to learn of Joyce's passing, but I know she's in a far better place. I always thought Joyce was one of the prettiest women I had ever seen, and her beautiful smile could light up a room. She and her brothers and sister were my dad's cousins, and I always enjoyed our visits from Morrilton to Harrison. My prayers are with you all during this difficult time!

We are grieved to learn of Joyce’s passing. We were in Florida and couldn’t find a way to be with you all in time for the service.

Our sadness is displaced by the memories in both of our hearts going back through childhood…Linda’s family spending time with the Horn household, and especially, Joyce’s fried potatoes; and Paul’s memories from church (he grew up believing that Joyce and Linda’s mom, Loretta, were sisters!)

Joyce left a sweetness and light that will always be with us. We know, without a doubt, that she is at peace and in the presence of the Lord and her loved ones.

Let’s all take comfort in knowing that we, too will be reunited with her at the feet of Jesus. God bless all of you.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I felt as though I knew Joyce my whole life. I remember growing up when my grandparents lived across the street from you all. Joyce was always so sweet to me and she always had a smile on her face. As a young girl, I thought she was the prettiest woman I had ever seen besides my own mom. Prayers and hugs to all of you. ❤️
