D.C. Huffman

of Henderson, TN

February 18, 1943 - January 17, 2022

D.C. Huffman, 78, of Henderson, TN, passed away Monday, January 17, 2022, in Gulf Shores, Alabama. He was born February 18, 1943, in St. Louis, Missouri, and spent most of his childhood in Malvern, Arkansas.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judy Hill Huffman of Henderson, TN; daughter, Kimberly Huffman Smith of Henderson, TN; son, Jeffrey Keith Huffman (Kara) of Medina, TN; granddaughter, Angel Huffman of Henderson, TN; his sister, Kathey Huffman Harden (Randy) of Maumelle, AR; several nieces and nephews; and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delton and Katie Huffman, and his brother, Douglas Huffman. He served as a Bible class teacher, deacon, and elder for the Oliver Creek Church of Christ (formerly the Brownsville Road Church of Christ) in Arlington, TN, for many years. He was a mentor and encourager to many and, because of his humble spirit, was often the peacemaker in difficult situations in both his personal and professional activities. He also served on the Health Arts Council for Freed Hardeman University and was currently a member of the President's Council at FHU. He loved visiting with students at FHU and encouraging them as they navigated college life and started their careers.

A graduate of Malvern High School, he received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Arkansas College of Pharmacy in 1966 and his Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacy Administration from the University of Mississippi in 1971. During his career as a pharmacist, he served the profession in several different positions, including as a Professor of Pharmacy Administration at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, interim Dean of the Graduate School at UT, Administration Vice Chancellor for the UT Health Sciences Center, Executive Vice President of the American College of Apothecaries, Executive Vice President of the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists, Senior Vice President for Pharmacy Practice and Management Services for the National Community Pharmacists Association and Executive
Director of the NCPA Foundation.

He loved his God, he loved his church, and he loved his family. He especially loved his granddaughter and they were best friends. He lived for the Lord, died in the Lord, and by God's grace, is with the Lord.

A graveside service for family and those that live in the area will be conducted at Old Texas Cemetery in Guy, AR, at 10 a.m. January 26, with a celebration of his life being held at the Henderson Church of Christ at 2 p.m. January 29, with visitation at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the President's Council at Freed Hardeman University, 158 E. Main Street, Henderson, TN 38340.

Judy, Kim, Keith & Angel,

I am saddened to hear of D.C.’s passing. Your wonderful friendship to Tricia, me and our kids has been a great blessing to our family. I carry with me many fond memories of fun evenings in your home……Judy, you were the consummate hostess while D.C. always joined with you in making everyone feel welcome and appreciated. We shared many wonderful meals and game nights with many others in your home……and enjoyed too many annual New Year’s Eve parties to even count. So many fun memories! We had the pleasure of house-sitting for you on a few occasions……that was always a treat for us. Of course, Kim (aka Kimberly Annie Mae) often served as babysitter for our kids as well. I recall many highly competitive games of ping-pong and pool with both D.C. and Keith. We enjoyed working together in various capacities at the Brownsville Road church for some 25 years. In his executive role with the ACA, D.C. was among the first to give this young CPA some business when I opened my practice in 1981……and he remained a loyal client for the entire 20 years of my practice. Judy, it was always to pleasure with work with y’all in that role. While our lives have taken some different paths and we haven’t seen each other very much in recent years, I will always be grateful for the blessing of having D.C. and y’all as friends and fellow followers of Jesus. May God’s peace and comfort sustain all of you as you navigate life together from here. If I can be of any help along the way, please let me know.

Love in Christ,

Randy

It was my honor to work for and with Dr. D. C. Huffman for 10 years. He was a superb mentor to young professionals in his administration. He was an exceptional organization administrator, leader and university professor. He conducted his professional and personal life with the upmost integrity. He loved teaching and learning. He was devoted to his wife Judy, their children, and grand daughter. He was unrelentingly loyal to his profession and to his personal and professional colleagues. He provided exceptional leadership for his church, his profession and his faith. Dr. Huffman was a wonderful man who constantly worked to make matters better for every individual and organization with which he was associated. His time on earth has been a blessing to so many. We are so very fortunate to have been in his orbit. Bless his soul.

I worked with D.C. at the National Community Pharmacists Association and the NCPA Foundation. D.C. was a (very) patient counselor and mentor and never seemed to get ruffled. His smooth, calm demeanor found a pathway to solutions that responded to the needs of all parties. He was a man of faith and set an example that many aspired to emulate. He will be missed.

My wife Gerolyn and I are very sad to have learned of D.C.'s passing. D.C. was my supervisor and mentor as I transitioned from pharmacy practice into the world of pharmacy association management. Were it not for D.C.'s strong support and wise guidance, my career transition at the National Community Pharmacy Association 30 years ago might not have been successful. I am forever in his debt and so glad to have known him. Our blessings and best wishes to Judy and the family.

Dr. Huffman was a wonderful mentor to me! He provided so many opportunities for me to grow professionally and learn more about community pharmacy practice! I will be forever grateful. Praying for Judy and the rest of the family. He and Judy were like family to me- always kind, feeding me and other graduate students who were working at ACA, and motivating us to dream big! He will be missed, but his legacy certainly lives on!
