September 20, 1928 - January 17, 2022

Elsie Newman, 93, of Harrison, passed away peacefully on Monday. January 17, 2022, at her home with her family at her side. Elsie was born September 20, 1928, in Tilly, Arkansas, Pope County, to Monroe and Martha (Crow) Brown the youngest of six children. Elsie was raised at the Tilly home place and attended school at Union Hill. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters and her husband J.T. Newman.

She is survived by her daughter, Tena and Dennie McCrackin, her sons, Ronald and Nita Cope, Harold and Sandy Cope, and Darrell Cope, all of Harrison. Grandchildren, Mandy Cope of Harrison, Tammy (Brit) Scheer of Arkadelphia, Kim Carpenter of Fayetteville, John (Emily) Cope of Harrison, Jeremy Cope of Harrison, Dalton (Lakin) Cope of St. Joe, Nat (Kim) Summers of Alread, Leah (Daniel) Decker of Harrison, Amber Cope of Ozark, Mo. Fifteen great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Elsie moved to Harrison in 1951. She worked at Levi Garment Factory, Dot's Restaurant, and for two years as manager of the Twin Cinema Theater. In 1987, Elsie married J.T. Newman and moved to Lampe, Missouri. They owned and operated a trailer park. They loved to travel around the country in their motor home. After J.T.'s death in 2005, Elsie moved back to Harrison, living next door to her daughter, Tena. Elsie was very talented and over the years loved redoing old furniture, quilting, sewing, crocheting, painting, cooking, canning, and singing gospel music.

Elsie was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. She crocheted baby caps for the church ministry to the Pregnancy Care Center for 12 years. She was a member of the Happy Stitchers Sewing Club for 14 years and helped make lap quilts for Veterans. Elsie enjoyed singing gospel at church singings. She sang alto with Tom Lawson and Austin Phillips for several years and sang at many area churches. She sang with a group weekly at the Adult Day Center in Harrison for several years. Elsie loved spending time with all her family and friends visiting, going out to eat, or just going for drives. She loved family gatherings and time with the grandkids and all their activities.

How blessed and how thankful we have been to go to church, ballgames, family gatherings with five generations! Elsie will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

I will really miss my dear friend Elsie. For along time we would see each other at least once a month at the Bellefonte Baptist Church singing, then visit on the phone, especially after Covid started. Recently she told me she couldn't hear me, so I told I would just talk louder. Missing you sweet Elsie and our secrets with each other are really safe between us. Loved you.
