I served in the Air Force.
Stephen MooreI am a Veteran.

of Jacksonville, AR

August 14, 1951 - October 31, 2021

LtCol Stephen Lynn ''Big Dog'' Moore (Retired), 70, of Jacksonville, Arkansas, was born on August 14, 1951, to the late W.A. ''Bill'' and Janell Moore in Jacksonville. He passed away on Sunday, October 31, surrounded by family.

Stephen earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Central Arkansas. He was a retired pilot and instructor for the 189th Airlift Wing, Arkansas Air National Guard, and a commercial pilot for Skyways Airlines, Air National Airlines, Eastern Airlines, and Brantiff Airlines.

He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Jacksonville and served in several capacities. Steve was a member in good standing of the Pile Brother's Sporting Club of Jefferson County and a founding member of the East Macon Country Club.

Steve served 36 years in the Arkansas Air National Guard. He enlisted in 1971 as a fire protection specialist for the 189th Airlift Wing before receiving his commission in 1973 and attending Air Force Flight Training. Steve flew the RF-101 Voodoo, KC-135 Stratotanker, and the C-130 Hercules for the 189th Airlift Wing. He was a C-130 instructor pilot for the 154th Training Squadron. According to Master Sergeant Bob Oldham (Retired), legend has it, Steve received the call sign ''Big Dog'' from a fellow aircrew member who went TDY with him early in his career and couldn't hang with Big Dog's ''social skills.'' It is said the aircrew member wrote in the unit's log that he would be better off staying on the porch instead of running from establishment to establishment. Although he was known for his shenanigans on the ground, he was all business when the plane was in the air, expecting hard work and diligence in perfecting one's skill. Steve has accrued over 14,000 flight hours-7,500 military and 6,500 civilians.

Steve loved traveling with his wife, family, and friends. He also enjoyed camping, boating, skiing and off-roading, whether it was on a four-wheeler or his side-by-side. He was very handy and was always the first to help a friend or family. He was known to say, ''Let's go break something so we can fix it.''

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joyce Y. Moore (Boggan); son, William R. Moore (Erin) of Dover, Arkansas; daughter, Amanda Lynn Moore Engelmeyer (Scott) of Yorktown, Virginia; grandchildren, Samantha Moore Wagner (Blaine) of Russellville, Halle and Aubrey Moore of Dover, and Julia and Abby Engelmeyer of Yorktown, Virginia. Stephen is the youngest of the Moore boys, as they have always been collectively and sometimes lovingly known. Brothers, Joe Moore, the eldest, of Jacksonville, Arkansas (Terri), Dick Moore of Heber Springs (Donna), and Dan Moore (Barbara) of Jacksonville.

The family asks for any donations to please be made to Hope Lutheran Church, 1904 MacArthur Drive, Jacksonville, Arkansas, 72076.

The visitation will be Monday, November 8, 5-7 P.M., at Hope Lutheran Church, located at 1904 MacArthur Drive in Jacksonville. The funeral will be Tuesday, November 9, 10:00 A.M., at Hope Lutheran Church. The burial will be Tuesday, November 9, 12:00 P.M., at Arkansas State Veteran's Cemetery, located at 1501 W. Maryland Ave., North Little Rock.

There will be a reception to follow at Hope Lutheran Church at 1:00 P.M. In memory and honor of Stephen's ''social skills,'' there will be a Celebration of Life at Jay's Sandbar (formerly the Goalpost) for those 21 and over, Tuesday, November 9, 2:00 P.M.

A true professional in the cockpit. Steve was a great guy to crew with whether the KC 135 or the C 130.
I have many fond memories flying with him in the Arkansas Air National Guard. May he rest in peace and his family find the Lord's comfort.

We have known Steve since the 1970's when we met him through Joyce. He had a big personality and could speak intelligently about any subject that was brought up. Steve and Chesley were both officers in the military, Steve in the Air Guard and Chesley in the Army Guard and they shared many service stories and experiences. When he retired, we asked him what he would be doing and what plans he had. His response was "there are so many people who need help." That's what he did, he helped many people. We're so glad we got to reconnect with Steve and Joyce a couple of years ago at a college group friends' reunion in Conway. Steve will be missed. Joyce, Amanda, Bill and families all are in our thoughts and prayers.

Truly a great man. True patriot and loving husband/father. He took care of his crew and the people that took care of his plane. Inspiration to all. High Flight buddy, you’re touching the face of God now like we all want to. You’re at peace now.

You have never had a true friend unless you have been a friend of Steve Moore. One can be having the most perfect wonderful day and Steve will show up to make sure you’re doing ok. I’ve always been amazed at the wonderful experiences be it him on his backhoe replacing a septic system in your yard cause He thinks you need a new one, sharing a toy like a 60 foot house boat (the blue goose), visiting 8 or 10 of Arkansas’ best establishments in one day and flying thousands of hours together in military aircraft. Steve, You truly made my life extra special. Rest In Peace My Friend, My Brother. May God give Joyce, Amanda, Bill and Family comfort and understanding.

Big Dog had a personality larger than life. I was glad to have the opportunity to serve with BD. He was fortunate to first hand witness my two worst landings ever in Gulfport and Las Cruces….great times and excellent canned clam chowder!! Fly on Eagles Wings and may the Peace of the Lord be with your family during these and all times. -Weed
