Edith Irene Foster

of Jonesboro, AR

June 27, 1929 - June 12, 2021

Edith Irene Foster, of Jonesboro, passed away on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at the age of 91, just days away from her 92nd birthday. She was the daughter of Jacob Pendarvis and Dorothy (Dewitt) Pendarvis Dunn. She married Paul D. "Dink" Foster in 1947 and they raised two children together. To her family, she was known as Edith, Sis or Aunt Edith, but to her husband's family she was affectionately called Tink.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, as well as two brothers, Joshua "Josh" Pendarvis, and William "Willie" Pendarvis; one sister, Lorene Allen; and one half sister, Mabel Denney.

She is survived by her son, Ronal W. Foster (Jessica) of Jonesboro; a daughter, Debbie Morris (Stacey) of West Memphis; two sisters, Betty Jo Willison and Donna Due Collins, both of Mammoth Spring; three grandchildren, Cory D. Morris (Ana), Jen D. Cloud (Nick) and Tracy Bearce; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas Bearce, Kaleb Bearce, Kaden Morris and Lilliana Morris; and a host of nieces, nephews and greats.

Edith was a member of Strawfloor Baptist Church for over 60 years and served in many capacities during that time. She was a cook in the Jonesboro School System and retired after more than 30 years of service.

Edith was known for her love of the Lord Jesus, her family, flowers, and gardening. Strong willed, independent and generous, she believed working hard was a virtue and laziness was a sin. Anyone who knew her was well aware of that. She was tiny but mighty, both in spirit and love, and she will be terribly missed.

Funeral services will be 3:30 pm Friday at Oaklawn Cemetery with John Sawyer officiating.

Visitation will be from 2 pm to 3 pm at Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home, 1900 West Washington Avenue in Jonesboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests lasting memorials in honor of Edith be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or www.stjude.org/donate/.

I'm finally coming to grips with mom's passing. It happened so suddenly and was such a shock that it has taken a little time think about things. The day mom passed she was starting her second day at Craighead Nursing Center in Jonesboro. I was told that she got up and had a little breakfast and was in good spirits. She took her meds and they took her vitals and everything looked fine. After that she asked them if she could lay down for a little while and they said sure, then helped her get comfortable on her bed. About 10 or 15 minutes later someone went in to ask her a question and she was gone.

Don't cry for my mom, this is what she wanted and prayed for for the last year or so. She had worked so hard during her life and it had really taken a toll on her body. It seemed that every movement hurt her. While we were all working hard and praying to keep here here longer, she was praying to move on. I do believe that she finally out prayed us and got her wish.

Mom taught me the real meaning of having faith and taught me how to work hard and like it. I've been lucky to do a lot of interesting things in my life but I would have done none of it without the ability to work long and hard and like it. I was always short on talent and long on effort.

She touched many people and they loved her for it. It was so wonderful to see that the day of her funeral. At the end of the visitation the song "Sinner Saved By Grace" was performed beautifully in a recording. As long as I live I will never forget the feeling I had when I suddenly realized that most of the people in the room were sing along with the song in harmony. First I got goose bumps, then tears started to come. If you were there and joined in in the singing, thank you for such a moving experience. Mom would have been over joyed, and singing along herself.

Mrs. Edith was a wonderful neighbor. I would visit her when I was 6 or 7 years old up until I had grown children. She and Mr.. Paul always seemed happy to have us visit them. She would give us lemonade or cookies or let us watch as she worked in her garden. We would always love it when she gave us flowers to take home to our parents. Then she was just as faithful to allow my children to visit her when they were young. We loved to get their Easter pictures made in her garden. She was the lunchroom clerk in my elementary school and we attended church together for many years. She became a close friend of my grandmother and was like a second grandmother to me. I will forever be grateful that I knew this woman who taught me what it means to love your neighbor as yourself.
