Margaret Henderson Fogleman

of Memphis, TN

May 20, 1926 - June 1, 2021

Margaret Henderson Fogleman was born in Marion, Arkansas, on May 20, 1926, to Nelson Hiram Henderson and Lola Barrett Henderson. She was a life-long resident of Marion, Arkansas, except for a few short years when she lived and worked in Memphis. She graduated from Marion High School in 1944, where she was active writing for the school newspaper, the West Memphis News, and the Crittenden County Times. When asked by a school newspaper reporter what subject she would like added at Marion High School, Margaret responded, ''Aeronautics, because an air age will follow the war and I'm sure it would be a very interesting course for any high school student. We're told airplanes will probably someday take the place of cars in a lot of homes and a good knowledge of planes would really be beneficial in our private lives.'' As a senior, she was the co-editor of the Marion School News with her best friend, Frances Banks.

Following graduation from high school, Margaret went to work at Kennedy Hospital in Memphis. In 1949, her high school friend Virginia Beck invited her to visit her in Marion where she worked for a young lawyer. Margaret rode the bus from Memphis, and upon arrival walked to her friend's place of work, where Virginia introduced her to her boss, Julian Fogleman. A week or so later Julian asked Virginia if she thought Margaret would go on a date with him and would Virginia ask her for him. When Virginia asked her, the response was immediate. With pride in her voice Margaret responded, ''If he wants to know if I would go out with him, he needs to ask me himself. You tell him that.'' A week later Julian called Margaret and asked her out. By Friday, May 26, 1950, Julian had worked up the courage to ask her to marry him. The Memphis Chicks were playing the New Orleans Pelicans in Memphis. In the tenth inning, at 10:45pm, he posed the question. The engagement ring was not purchased until the next day; being a typical Fogleman, he did not want to buy a ring without knowing her answer.

On August 11, 1950, Margaret and Julian married at the Marion United Methodist Church. This began their greatest adventure: raising and educating five children. Margaret was an avid bridge player, but her greatest love was her family and her church. She was also known as a great cook. Her children and grandchildren loved her chocolate mousse with ''blood'' (raspberry sauce), and her pound cake was a favorite - as well as a big seller at the church's annual Hullabaloo. She also shared her culinary skill by baking bread to welcome new members of the church.

In addition to being a wonderful cook, Margaret loved gardening and was proud of achieving her Master Gardener certification. She gave back to the community in her roles of homeroom and cub scout den mother, hospital volunteer, and in the countless hours spent working at the Good Neighbor Center.

Known to her grandchildren as ''Mudger'' or ''Mur'' she was loved by all. Holidays were always special at the Fogleman house with five children, their spouses, 11 grandchildren, and utter chaos - and ''Mudger'' loved every minute of those celebrations.

Margaret Fogleman was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Walter Jean Henderson and Raymond Henderson of Clarkedale, Billy Henderson of Batchelor, Louisiana, A.C. Henderson of Memphis, Tennessee and a sister, Ellen Holt of Earle, Arkansas. She is survived by her five children, Lisa Fogleman Heath and her husband, John, of Marion, Arkansas; J. Barton Fogleman and his wife, Jeanne, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Judge John N. Fogleman and his wife, Nancy, of Marion, Arkansas; Jennifer Fogleman Brown and her husband, Paul, of Atlanta, Georgia; and Frances Fogleman Irwin of Atlanta, Georgia; 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

I first met Mrs Margaret, Mr. Julian, Lisa, Barton and John when my sister started going to U of A in Fayetteville in 1965 and we started going to Razorback games. Most everyone from Marion and Crawfordsville stayed at the Trade Winds in Springdale. Going to games I got to know a lot of the families in Marion, before attending high school at Marion. Later attended Marion Methodist Church with them. They were one of the best families I have ever known.
Lisa, Barton, John and all the family are in my prayers daily!!!

Margaret Fogleman was one of the nicest women I have ever known, She was the epitome of a beautiful southern lady. I am glad to say that I knew her and I loved her. Margaret and Julian were my church friends. Margaret always went the extra mile to make someone feel comfortable and included. Praying for the family as they go through this difficult time.

What a wonderful obit for a wonderful person! All you have to do is look at the children and grandchildren Margaret raised to know what kind of person she was. Lisa was a bridesmaid in our wedding and Julie was in my kindergarten class. Words that come to mind when remembering her are integrity, honesty, gentleness, generosity, kindness, grace, family love. Our prayers go out to the family at this time. We consider it a privilege to have known Margaret Fogleman. She will be greatly missed.

I’m so sorry for her family, and I wish I could have experienced one more hug from my Aunt ‘Melba’ and heard one more of her wonderful chuckles. We were so blessed to have her in our lives, and remember fondly when she and Uncle J visited in Montana.
She will be missed by so many.

We wish to extend our condolences to the family at this time. May you be comforted by the knowledge that soon death will be no more. Never again will we have to bury our loved ones. God makes this wonderful promise to us in Isaiah 25:8 where it states that “He will swallow up death forever!”
I hope you find solace in these words. We thought a lot of your Mom & Dad.

I never met Margaret, except through her husband Julian and son Judge John Fogleman. But I do have a little story. Julian called me one time and asked if I would like ticket to a Razorback football game in Fayetteville . I asked how much they cost he said nothing. He had season tickets and hotel room reservations for the season. He gave them and the reservation to Shirley and I for the weekend. We really enjoyed the game and the weekend away thanks to Julian and Margaret. The Foglemans were/are generous people and a huge credit to Marion, East Arkansas and the whole state. Rest in Peace Margaret.
