Clayton A. MehargI am a Veteran.

of Letona, AR

December 22, 1924 - March 16, 2021

Clayton Austin Meharg, 96, of Letona, AR, passed away on March 16, 2021 in an automobile accident along with his daughter, Phyllis Meharg Kerr, 70, of North Little Rock. Clayton was born in White County on December 22, 1924 to Rassy L. ''RL'' and Ina Pitts Meharg. He attended the Letona School during his childhood. Clayton served in the United States Army during World War II. He earned the Purple Heart while stationed in the Philippines. He worked for the International Shoe Company for several years after returning from the war.

Wanda Lawrence and he were married on October 4, 1947 and raised two daughters, Phyllis and Terry. Wanda passed away on September 14, 2017. Clayton and Wanda raised and sold cattle for many years in their hometown of Letona. They enjoyed going to the Beebe Flea markets on Saturdays where they sold chickens and vegetables. Clayton was a kind and gentle man who never said anything bad about anyone. From the time he was a child, he was a hard worker, hoeing and picking cotton, working in the fields and picking strawberries. He had a faithful companion lovingly known as Cricket, his dog. Until Clayton's health failed, Cricket and he would walk a mile or two every day. He was a member of the Letona Missionary Baptist Church.

Along with his parents, Clayton was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Lu Meharg; an infant brother, Adrian Lowell Meharg; two sisters, Lutia Harrison and Lois Tarpley and his son-in-law Terry Kerr.

He is survived by his daughter, Terry Meharg Haney (Chuck) of North Little Rock; one grandson, Scott Kerr of North Little Rock; one granddaughter, Stacy Harkey of Sherwood; two great-grandchildren, Chase Harkey and Brooklyn Brookman both of Sherwood; one brother, Harvey Meharg (Pat) of Letona and one sister, Lola Baker of Searcy along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 2:00PM at Roller-Daniel Funeral Home Chapel with Interment to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Searcy, AR.

Terry, I worked with Terry and Phyllis at the big Baptist Hospital in LR for years and considered them to be my friends. Losing them and your dad is tragic and I’m so sorry. They will be missed. God bless you in the days and years to come.

I offer my most sincere prayers and deepest condolences to Mr. Meharg's family and friends.

Him and his daughter were in the lane beside me when the accident happened, and we have never met. But, I want to let their loved ones know that I knelt on the highway and prayed for them to be lifted up to Heaven almost immediately after the wreck.

Hopefully, knowing this can bring you some much needed comfort at such a tragic time.

God bless all of you!
