Dr. John Douglas Andrew ''Doug'' Poindexter of Conway was born on November 8, 1933 in Chattanooga, TN and passed away on October 25, 2025 in Conway, AR.
Doug was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He met the love of his life, Ann Graves Robbins, while in medical school and the two shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. Together they raised three children and Doug took great joy in supporting them in all their activities and interests. He adored his grandchildren and was immensely proud of them.
Doug and Ann shared a lifelong love of travel, exploring destinations around the world including Europe, Asia, and Central and South America. An avid hiker and camper, Doug also found great joy in exploring the beauty of the United States through its national and state parks.
Deeply committed to his faith and community, Doug was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Conway for over 60 years where he served in many capacities, including as church president. In 1999 in honor of his contributions to the field of medicine and service to the communities in Conway and Faulkner County, Conway Regional Medical Park named a building in his honor. He was also a proud member of the Kiwanis Club and received the Legion of Honor Award in 2014 in recognition of his long service.
Doug was born and raised in the St Elmo neighborhood of Chattanooga, graduated from Chattanooga City High School in 1953, and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Chattanooga (now the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga), where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He received his MD degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1957. Following medical school he served with the U.S. Public Health Service in Galveston, TX, before completing his surgical residency through Emory University at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, GA.
In 1965, Doug was invited by Dr. Ed Dunaway and Dr. Bob Benefield to join the Conway Clinic where he practiced general surgery and family medicine for many years before later partnering with Dr. Robert Taylor. He devoted more than 30 years to caring for the Conway and Faulkner County community. After retiring from private practice in 1995, he continued his lifelong commitment to serving others by operating a free clinic through St. Vincent's Hospital in North Little Rock for 12 years.
Doug was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dr. Ann Robbins Poindexter; his parents, Ela May and Herbert Andrew Poindexter of Chattanooga, TN; his brother, Parke Stratton Poindexter II of Jacksonville, FL; his sisters, Frances Elizabeth (Betty) Poindexter Rogers of Nassawadox, VA, and Doris Virginia Poindexter Morris of Chattanooga, TN; and his son, Andrew Stratton Poindexter of Houston, TX.
He is survived by his son, Joseph Lamar Poindexter (Mary Ellen) of Atlanta, GA; his daughter, Ruth Robbins Poindexter Johnson (Darren) of Little Rock, AR; his granddaughter, Elaine Robbins Poindexter of Atlanta, GA; and his grandson, Parke Stratton Poindexter III of Atlanta, GA. His family will remember him for his wisdom, humor, and kindness.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 22 at 1:00 pm CST at First United Methodist Church, 1610 Prince Street, Conway, AR 72034. Friends are encouraged to make memorial donations in Doug's name to Heifer International (www.heifer.org).
