Evelyn (Midge) Poirier-Shultis was born on July 25, 1944, in Greenville, Maryland, to Robert Forest Poirier and Angelina May Fountaine. She passed away peacefully in Mountain Home, Arkansas, on September 30, 2025.

Midge was a devoted sister, mother, grandmother, and friend, known for her generous heart and her lifelong devotion to the care and well-being of animals.

She is lovingly remembered by her sisters, Eleanor Poirier-Cohen of North Carolina and Angela Poirier of Altoona, Pennsylvania; her son, Tod Engel (Jacqueline) of Orlando, Florida; her beloved grandson, Silas Engel of Atlanta, Georgia; and her stepson, David Shultis of North Haven, Connecticut.
She now rests alongside those she loved who passed before her, her parents; her husband and best friend, Wayne Arthur Shultis of Milford, Connecticut; her brothers, Robert Poirier of Wyoming and Paul Poirier of Wenatchee, Washington; and her sister, Elaine Poirier-Santoni of Meriden, Connecticut.

Midge's life was filled with purpose, and her greatest passion was helping animals in need. Her kindness and tireless efforts touched the lives of countless furry companions, and the people who loved them.

She served on the Board of Directors of the Meriden Humane Society in Connecticut and was a driving force in founding the Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic in Yellville, Arkansas, serving Marion and Baxter Counties. She also held the role of Secretary for the Humane Society of North Central Arkansas in Mountain Home. With the help of many caring volunteers, Midge helped raise over $250,000 for animal shelters, a legacy of compassion that will live on for years to come.

Midge didn't want a formal service. In her quiet and humble way, she preferred that any tributes be made through continued kindness toward animals. In her memory, donations can be made to the Community Cat Project, operated through the Have-A-Heart Humane Society in Yellville, Arkansas.
