February 10, 1944 - August 11, 2025

Carroll R. Bates (C.R.), a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on Monday, August 11, 2025, surrounded by his family in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Carroll was born on February 10, 1944, in Sheridan, Arkansas, the son of Curtis and Cora Bates. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers-in-law, John Beard and Gene Kennedy.

Carroll grew up in Sheridan before graduating from Hall High School in Little Rock in 1962. He went on to earn a degree in Industrial Management from the University of Arkansas, where he was a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Upon graduation, Carroll answered the call to serve, enrolling in Naval Officer Candidate School and later serving aboard the USS Okinawa as a Lieutenant JG.

Following his military service, Carroll built a successful career in industrial chemical sales. After many years of hard work, he retired early - a decision he often called ''His favorite job.'' Retirement allowed him to devote more time to the things he loved: playing golf with the DPC group, spending time at Rocky Top (family camp) in Mountain View, tending to his garden, hunting, and fishing. He especially treasured cheering from the stands at his grandson Finley's ball games and watching with pride as his granddaughters, Addison and Scarlet, brought energy to the sidelines as they cheered on their team.

Known far and wide for his legendary canned pickles and jalapeño peppers - plus the ability to fix or build just about anything - Carroll had a gift for bringing people together over a meal, whether around the table, the grill, or a campfire. He delighted in swapping stories and delivering his trademark one-liner jokes. He was humble, kindhearted, unpretentious and made everyone feel welcome in his presence.

Carroll's greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Judy; his son, Jason Bates (C'ella) of Little Rock; his granddaughters, Addison Starkey (Trey) and Scarlet Bates; his daughter, Jill Caraway (Tommy) of Scott; and his grandson, Finley Caraway. He also leaves behind his sister, Liz Kennedy of Dallas, Texas, and her sons, Clay and David; sister-inlaw, Jan Beard of Jonesboro, and her son, Jay Beard; and his special niece, Jennifer Pinson, also of Jonesboro.

Carroll's life was marked by service, laughter, and an unwavering devotion to the family he cherished. His greatest legacy lives on in the loved ones he so deeply cared for.

The family will gather privately at a later date to celebrate his life.

He was a patient, thoughtful soul, always taking his time to do things right. No one could make cracklin' cornbread quite like he could, and he shared it with the same warmth and care he gave to those around him. His kindness and quiet wisdom will be deeply missed.

CR put every Christmas toy together for my kids when they were little. There is no telling how many tricycles and bikes he put together!
He will certainly be missed by his beloved family and never forgotten ❤️
