Joseph ''Joe'' William Matthews, 84, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Joe was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on September 11, 1940, to Jess and Marian Matthews. Joe was part of the Little Rock Central High School National Championship football team of 1957 and upon graduation from LRCH in 1958 as a National Merit Scholar, he enrolled in Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. Joe was accepted into UAMS College of Medicine during his junior year at Hendrix and was awarded both his Bachelor's and Medical Degree from UAMS in 1965. Joe completed his residency at St. Jude Hospital and John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Joe married his wife of 38 years Constance ''Connie'' Matthews in 1967, until her passing in 2006. Joe also served in the United States Air Force as an officer (captain) and was honorably discharged prior to completing his fellowship. Joe completed his fellowship and board certification in Allergy and Immunology and practiced for 40 years until his retirement in 2011. Joe enjoyed playing and watching golf, skeet shooting, fishing, watching football, boxing, basketball, and was an avid reader and collector of firearms and edged weapons and military history.

Preceding Joe in death includes parents Jess and Marian Matthews, wife Constance Matthews, and son Brad Matthews. Survivors include daughter Catherine (Scott) Stracener, grandchildren Emma Stracener and Jonathan Stracener.

Joe has been such a big part of my life these past 8 months"teaching me, making me laugh, and putting up with me even when I got on his nerves (which I definitely did ) I care so deeply, and I'm holding Cathrine and her family in my heart right now.
