of Mayflower, AR
May 20, 1943 - May 25, 2025
Larry Lee Woods, 82, of Mayflower, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, but anyone who knew him knows he didn't live a quiet life.
Larry was born May 20, 1943, in Manawa, Iowa, to Emanuel and Phyllis (Gutheil) Woods. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961, where he got his GED. He served for four years and one day until he was discharged as a Lance Corporal. During his service, he traveled to Hawaii, Guam, Japan, and the Philippines. Larry worked as a machinist at the Union Pacific Railroad from 1970 until he retired in 2003. On June 2, 1967, he married the love of his life, Susan Tompkins. Together, they raised six children in Carson, Iowa. They moved to Arkansas in 1989 when he was transferred by the railroad.
Larry was a Fraternal Order of Eagles #104 member and an American Legion member for many years. Larry enjoyed fishing, being with his family, and playing cards. Larry loved watching his favorite sports, including the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Arkansas Razorbacks, and NASCAR. Larry loved his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Diane Powers; brother, Ron Woods; and son, David Woods.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Susan; his daughters, Lorie Husz, Linda Merritt, Cheryl (Tim) Creek, Jennifer (Jerod) Jensen, and Stephanie (Paul) Russell; and his siblings, Beverly Kjar, Don Woods, Dave Woods, and Randy Woods. He is also survived by his grandchildren Zackary (Carley) Husz, Sonja Husz, Meghann (Nathan) Myers, Mallory Merritt, Andrew Creek, Alexis Jensen, Skyler Jensen, Brandon Russell, Brian Russell, Drake Woods, and Macy Woods. In addition, he leaves behind great-grandchildren Mia Husz, Myah Husz, Marlie Myers, Darius Myers, and Kristina Myers; and a host of other family and friends.
No memorial service will be held per Larry's wishes. Instead, a private gathering will be held in Council Bluffs, IA, Saturday, May 31, in the evening with family and friends, which was also his wish.
My condolences and prayers are with Ms. Susan, family and friends. I met Mr. Larry and Ms. Susan through Harps. They were always a great pleasure to see. He was always very cheerful and friendly.
I'm sorry about the passing of your father, Larry. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.
