Susan Higby Carter

of Helena, AR

November 27, 1946 - May 9, 2025

Susan Higby Carter, 78, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2025 in Memphis, Tennessee. Born on November 27, 1946 in Helena, Arkansas, she was a beacon of love, laughter and service; a woman whose presence made the world a little brighter.

Susan's life was defined by her unwavering faith, compassion and dedication to her community. As a devoted member of St. John's Episcopal Church, she found deep joy in serving others and proudly led the Arkansas Episcopal Church Women's community with grace and enthusiasm. Her heart for education touched countless lives during her thirty-five years at Phillips County Community College, where she nurtured students with wisdom, patience and her signature wit.

Beyond her professional and community work, Susan lived a life filled with simple joys and deep connections. She found delight in the intricate art of needlepoint, the challenge of crossword puzzles and the energy of the King Biscuit Blues Festival, where she volunteered with a smile. She was a loyal friend, a devoted mother and a doting grandmother, cherishing every moment with her beloved daughters, Elizabeth and Lane and her treasured grandchildren. And of course, her home was never complete without the quiet companionship of her cherished cats.

Susan had a remarkable gift for friendship, an ability to make anyone feel valued, heard and understood. Her kindness was boundless and her perfectly timed humor could lighten even the heaviest hearts. While she is deeply missed, her legacy of love and laughter lives on in all who were lucky enough to know her.

Susan is survived by her loving daughters, Elizabeth Carter Jimenez (Bryant) and Lane Carter Loesch (Kyle); her four wonderful grandchildren, USMC LCpl Bryant E. Jimenez Jr., Gabe, Ethan and Hudson Loesch and a host of dear friends and neighbors.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Roberta Higby and her beloved in-laws, Marylene and W.O. Carter, Sr.

Though she has left this world, Susan's light continues to shine; in memories shared, in lives touched and in the unwavering love that will forever bind those who knew her.

A memorial service for Susan Higby Carter will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Helena, Arkansas.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. John's Episcopal Church for the organ restoration project at P.O. Box 770, Helena, Arkansas 72342 or to Maple Hill Cemetery for support of maintenance needs at P.O. Box 136, Helena, Arkansas 72342.

Dear Liz and Lane,
I was saddened to hear of the passing of your Sweet Mama and one of my Dear Friends. We worked together at the College. I remember when you young ladies were little girls.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers for the coming days, weeks, and know that your Sweet Mama is at Rest and Peace now. I pray the Lord wrap His Loving arms around each of you at this difficult time.Gos Bless...Love Barbara (Ballard)

So sorry for your loss. I remember double dating in the mid-60s, when I would have Nancy Henkel as a date and Bobby Thompson had Susan as a date. She was beautiful and a lot of fun to be with. It was good to see her at St. John's when I would come back to Helena for visits.
