Gary Joe LewisI am a Veteran.

October 17, 1936 - May 23, 2024

Gary Joe Lewis, 87, of Conway, AR went to join the Lord on May 23, 2024. He was born to Noel and Dorothy Cannon Lewis on October 17, 1936 in Arkansas City, Kansas.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Carolyn and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Neal and Betty, Don and Phyllis and Richard.

Left to cherish his memories are his son, Mark (Dayna) and three grandchildren, KatyBeth, Adam and KaraLyse and nieces, Nikki (David) Cunningham, Sally (Bob) Gordon, Robyn (Derek) Sprague and Bonnie (Rob) Wetzel.

Gary Joe graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1954. He proudly served in the Army Reserve from 1958 to 1964. He had a successful career with the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department, retiring in 1994. Along with his brothers, he owned Lewis Cattle Ranch in Quitman. Gary Joe enjoyed working outside and having projects at both his house and Mark's.

He and Carolyn loved caring for Adam through his three-year battle with Leukemia and he was the best caregiver for Carolyn through her multiple battles with cancer.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Arkansas Hospice Conway and Salem Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center employees who took care of him in his last months.

Mark, I always enjoyed running into Joe at the Prince Street Walmart where we would clog the aisle while conversing over the banana display. I also have pleasant recollections of Joe and Gerald sitting outside in the shade of the house swapping stories about politics, highways, trucking, farming and whatever else came up. They didn't settle any issues, but someone had to try! Carolyn and I would remain in the house talking about shoes and our life-long history of hilarious situations.

Joe was quiet-spoken but intelligent, diligent, congenial, helpful, loyal, friendly, caring, and committed to family. The Lord put those two together for reasons of His own. Between Joe and Carolyn, they deserve most of the positive adjectives that exist. Thank you, Lord, for creating two of your very best.

Mr. Lewis was so kind & we had many conversations throughout the growing season about lawn care as he drove his lawn mower by our house on his way to Mark’s house. He had such great knowledge & was always quick to give a kind compliment. We have missed our conversations with him. He will be greatly missed in our neighborhood.

Gary Joe was such a fine man, husband, father and doting grandfather. I will always remember the wonderful care he took of his dear wife, our treasured friend, Carolyn. They also deserve great credit for the devotion to their grandson during his treatment for leukemia. Mark, Dayna and all, please accept my condolences.

I witnessed the projects first hand living across the street from Mark. Gary would come over and help me with my projects in the yard as well, without even being asked! He was always happy to lend a hand and a strong back. You will be missed Mr. Gary Joe. Prayers of peace and comfort to Mark and the family.
