Mary Jo Sells

of Smyrna, TN

August 31, 1954 - April 8, 2024

Jo Wood Sells, 69, died peacefully on Monday April 8, 2024 at TriStar Stone Crest Medical Center in Smyrna, Tennessee. She was born to Gilmore and Florine Wright Wood in Parkin, Arkansas on August 31, 1954.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Lester Sells; two daughters, Katherine E. Jackson and Sara P. Wood; grandchildren, Leah M. Wilson, Michael S. Rowton, Jr., Carl M. Rowton; great-grandchild, Karly M. Wilson.

Jo Wood Sells, would first and foremost like to be known that she had a tremendous desire for family. With the birth of her first grandchild, that word ''family'' took on a new meaning. From the instant that tiny, messy, gorgeous bundle with red peach fuzz on her head was handed to her she knew her life was forever changed. There were hurdles, victories, defeats, peaks, and valleys up until that day, but that day was a new beginning, one of which she would never tire.
She looked at life as an art form. She took nothing at face value. She loved people and always tried to figure them out ''What externally might seem to have been Quite the free spirit'' was an analytical, complex being. To her water symbolized peace. She could totally lose herself for hours listening to the natural movement of water.
Simple things were pleasing to her. Just knowing that no matter what was going on, in the rest of the world, who's mad at who, or how early it was in the morning, her dogs were always happy to see her. When she felt like no one else cared, one of the dogs or all of the dogs would be all too happy to give her a big kiss or just sit still and cuddle. They were good listeners too. Usually, they heard all the brilliant ideas before anyone else. Weird to some, she liked to think of herself as eccentric.
To some of her life, ''It's been real.'' Real what, you may ask. Each and everyone of you would answer that differently. Each of you would be right. Many different experiences with many different people. All of which made up the person you knew.
Services will be held at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home, West Memphis, Arkansas, on Thursday, April 11, 2024 beginning with visitation at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Crittenden Memorial Park in Marion, Arkansas.

The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital

Lester, Family, and Friends:

As members of the Hospitality Team at Brentwood Baptist Church, my wife Kathy and I extend our deepest condolences to you all during this incredibly difficult time. Although we can't be there in person, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with each of you as you navigate through the loss of Mary Jo.

We had the privilege of knowing Mary Jo through our shared involvement in welcoming and serving our church community. Her dedication made everyone feel valued and appreciated, whether it was greeting people at the church doors or ensuring everyone felt welcome on the shuttle from satellite parking. Her friendly demeanor and genuine smile made every encounter a joy.

In moments like these, we take solace in our shared faith and the hope of eternal salvation through Jesus Christ. May you find comfort in knowing that Mary Jo now rests in the arms of our Savior, and may you find strength in the love and support of those around you.

My condolences to the family of Ms. Jo. She was so nice to me when I stayed in her guest house. I was there caring for her pets while they were settling in their new home in TN. I came into her life when she needed someone to trust. Prayers for Mr. Lester and family in the days ahead. I will never forget her.

Lester and girls, I am so sorry that you all are going through this difficult time. But I know that Jo knew exactly where she was going once her time on earth was over! Just knowing that she is in the presence of our Lord makes this a little easier to cope. I know that she is there with my Granny worshipping the Lord and singing praises at the top of her voice! I loved the time we all shared together and I know that one day we will see her again. God bless you and the rest of your family!

Lester, I am deeply saddened that Jo passed away. She was such a sweet lady.
I will always remember all the cakes she made over the years for your City of West Memphis work family. Also, the time we shared with the girls while attending West Memphis Christian school.
You and the girls are in our prayers during this sorrowful time.
