Dorothy J. Halter

of Conway, AR

December 7, 1936 - January 28, 2024

Dorothy (Dot) Gates Mills Halter, 87, of Conway, formerly of Crossett, passed away peacefully at her home Sunday, January 28, 2024. She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Parish and an avid supporter of the Booster Club and Sports Program. She was well known for her baking skills and volunteer work with the St. Joseph Bazaar, Lenten Suppers, K of C fish fries and Christian Ladies Bake Sales. Dot was a long-time member of the Conway Civic League and the St. Joseph Christian ladies. She was a former cub scout leader and also active in the Audubon Society. Dot encouraged higher education. She was widely known and cherished by all the students and faculty that interacted with her in the registrar's office of Hendrix College, where she retired after 32 years of service.

Dot was best known by her title Nana, which became synonymous with having a loving and giving heart. She constantly supported her family in their sports and music events, traveling long distances and watching them on livestream broadcasts. She was known for her Nana bread, homemade treats and handwritten cards that seem to always arrive on special days.

Dot was born in Crossett, Arkansas on December 7, 1936, the daughter of Howard and Eloise (Sisson) Gates. She was widowed twice; Lt. Thomas Mills, fighter pilot US Airforce and Edward A. Halter Jr, Conway businessman and husband of 47 years. Dot was also preceded in death by Kim Bunch Halter, her daughter-in-law, wife of Robert E. Halter.

Dot is survived by her children, Stephen T. Halter and wife, Franci of Enola, Patricia A. Moix and husband, David of Conway, Robert E. Halter of Conway and Bridget R. Davanzo and husband, Carmen of Conway; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Charles Gates and wife, Sue of Conway; her sister, Jerry Lawler and husband, Bob of San Jose, California, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A rosary will be held at 6:00pm Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway with visitation following. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00am Thursday, February 1, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Conway. Burial will follow at Crestlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph School Endowment or Edward and Dorothy Halter Endowed Fund for Softball.

I am so sorry to learn of Dottie's passing. She was a great neighbor! She even made a dress for me. I also remember what a good cook she was! She was great friend of my mother who had a beautiful smile! She will be missed by all who knew her. Hugs and prayers for all of you!

Sincere condolences to all of the Halter family at the passing of “Dot”
I can still remember when her cinnamon rolls were dropped off at the concession stand to sell . They always had the crowd buzzing to get one before they sold out. What a phenomenal baker!
Much love and prayers,
Mike and Jackie Harrell

Condolences to Dot's family. I greatly enjoyed working with her at Hendrix for many years. She was beloved by the students, faculty and staff. She was a fun traveling companion on a trip to Italy in 2000 with a Hendrix group. I enjoyed her as a fellow Civic League member, too. I always appreciated her pleasant spirit and can-do attitude. She will be missed.

I am devastated over the loss of my friend and neighbor Dorothy. We were neighbors for twenty years. I was so blessed to have had the privilege of living next door to her during that time. When we had surgeries or bad things happen, she would show up at my door with a cake, pie or cookies. If my husband or I was hospitalized, she would go to the hospital to check on us. That was just the way she was. She had a caring and giving heart.
Her love for her family was amazing and it showed in everything she did for them.
I will miss her so much.
