Terry Southall

of Austin, TX

November 3, 1944 - April 10, 2023

Terry Southall died on April 10, 2023 at his home in Austin. After a long struggle with cancer and other health issues, he passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loving family. He is preceded in death by his parents Morris and Lorene Southall and his (infant) sister Sherry.

Terry was born in Bakersfield, California on November 3, 1944 where Morris was stationed in the Air Force. Relocating to Texas after WWII to start a coaching career, the family lived in several towns including Seminole, Winters, and Victoria, eventually settling in Brownwood in 1960. While his dad was establishing a legendary career in coaching, Terry became a standout athlete competing in several sports, but achieving prominence as a quarterback at Brownwood High School. Upon graduation and having set several passing records, he received a scholarship to Baylor where he lettered three years as a quarterback while being honored to play in the Blue-Gray college all-star game. After a successful career at Baylor, in 1967 he was drafted by the Baltimore Colts and served as back-up to Johnny Unitas for two years. Throughout the football years and later, Terry received many honors and awards for his accomplishments among which are: Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame, Texas High School Hall of Fame, Gordon Wood Hall of Fame, as well as selections to various all state teams. Besides recognition for his athletic accomplishments, he gained respect from both peers and coaches alike as a calm and confident leader who could be counted on to perform well under the biggest challenges. At the end of his football career, Terry relocated to Little Rock, Arkansas where he settled into family life and began working in various business enterprises. By 1994 he had moved back to Austin where he worked in various capacities for the state, finally retiring from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts office in 2017.

Survivors include wife Sharon Southall, brothers Si Southall of San Angelo and Shae Southall and wife Terri of Odessa as well as daughter Lee Southall and son Chris Southall, both of Little Rock, Arkansas and three grandchildren, Grayson, Samantha, and Silas. Also included among survivors are stepdaughters, Piper Perlichek and husband Kory of Mason and Becca Gilbreth and husband Joe of Austin as well as their children: James, Corinne (husband Seth Hudson), Grace, Tori, and Joey. Prominent among survivors is Terry's beloved springer spaniel Roxie. Those mourning Terry's death also include many cousins, nieces, and nephews as well as an extended circle of lifelong friends who will remember him for his steadfast loyalty and friendship. He will be well remembered as a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

It was Terry's wish to participate in the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center's willed body program.

A public celebration of life will be held at an appointed time in the future. Photographic tribute will be available online at: www.rollerfuneralhomes.com (Little Rock). Donations in Terry's honor may be made to Hyde Park Baptist Church, 3901 Speedway, Austin, TX 78751.

My condolences to the family. I lived in Winters and played for Morris. I remember going to coaches house and throwing the football with Terry and Si in the front yard. I knew that he had a great football career and Coach. My prayers are with the Family. I received the notice from one of my classmate from the class of 1958.

Prayers and condolences to the Southall family. My father played football with Mr. Southall at Baylor and I heard many many stories about their time together and some of the great victories....led by the legendary QB. I never had the chance to meet Mr. Southall, but feel like I knew him. My mother (Lynn Hood) did know Terry and I pass along her thoughts and prayers as well.

Terry and my dad were very close when they growing up. Terry always made sure we had home game tickets to Baylor games. When we went I remember how amazed I was with all of it Terry seemed like a giant to me back then. I always wanted to play football like him but never had the talent he did and because of that he was my hero and look up to him. Love ya man tell my dad Hi

So proud to call you my cousin. To this day I tell stories of your Baylor days. I remember many many games sitting in the end zone by myself (momma and daddy got to sit in the box seats lol). But I didn't care. I cheered and hollered when we won and cried singing That Good Ole Baylor Line when we didn't. And then waiting and waiting and waiting lol outside the locker room for you to come out. You'd always lift me up and hug me. ❤️ Very special memories. Our family get togethers as a child were also special even if you boys wouldn't let me play football. Lol I'll always cherish those memories. RIP now free from pain. ❤️

Terry was our brother-in-law. We shared many family gatherings, some of us spending our time talking Brownwood, Baylor and Aggie football. Lots of football. And even a few Baltimore stories. We watched him combat his health issues, and marveled at the the loving care Sharon provided. He struggled with all his might but now he is at rest.

Terry was my brother-in-law for 17 yrs. It was always a fun time when all the cousins and uncles and aunts would gather at Angel’s and Poppa’s for holidays and/or football games! One thing that always impressed me about Terry and his brothers as well was that although they were football royalty, they were humble about their accomplishments . R.I.P. Uncle Terry.
