of Batesville, AR
April 7, 1934 - August 22, 2022
Jimmy Lee Hughes, 88, of Batesville, passed away on August 22, 2022.
A lifelong resident of Batesville, Jimmy was born on April 7, 1934 to Dallas and Loice Gennings Hughes, who predecease him.
Jimmy was a loving husband, father, brother and an especially proud grandfather. He spent his working years at the Batesville Guard, where he initially delivered papers on horseback and then worked as the Production Manager, running the presses and ensuring the residents of Batesville had their daily local paper. Jimmy never met a stranger and was always ready to share a story. He loved hunting, fishing and skeet shooting and was happiest when he was out working on his land, tinkering in his workshop and spending time with his beloved wife, BB.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Bertha Wade Hughes of Batesville; two daughters, Julie Reves (Ed) of Sherwood and Laura Baldwin (Bruce) of Cave Creek, AZ; one granddaughter, Natalie Grace Baldwin, who had him wrapped around her little finger; one sister, Glenda Brewer of Little Rock; two nephews, David Brewer (Nancy) and Scott Brewer (Amy) and their families. In addition to immediate family, Jimmy was blessed to have lifelong friendships with many people in Batesville.
The family would like to extend their thanks to all the healthcare providers that cared for Jimmy, especially the White River Medical Center Cardiac Rehab team and the wonderful staff at Wood-Lawn Heights.
Graveside memorial service will be held at 2pm Friday, September 2, 2022 at Oaklawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be considered to Central Avenue United Methodist Church, 1205 N Central Avenue, Batesville, AR 72501 or Old Independence Regional Museum, 380 S. 9th, Batesville, AR 72501.

Hugs & prayers for your family as you treasure his wonderful legacy!
I so regret not having seen Jimmy in several years. We are both blessed to be 2 cousins among so many but too many to see as often as we wish. All I remember about him was his constant smile and warm kindness to us young-uns. I bet Jimmy is already enjoying the company of our large family members that have been waiting for him. Bless him and comfort to all those he left behind.
With a laugh as big as all outdoors, Jimmy loved his workers and treated them like royalty. It was a pleasure and an honor to work for him for many years. It was our loss when he retired after the paper began pagination. He could have knocked that out, too, just like all the other jobs. I wish we had talked him into it. Jimmy will always be remembered with joy.
Mr. Jimmy Hughes was one of the finest men I've ever worked for, or known. His heart was big enough to include anyone and everyone.
From all our family, we were all blessed to have known him.

I miss you at Cardiac Rehab Jimmy..We always had time for a chat and story telling. Last week when you came in, we talked about how precious life is, when it is a good life we are living. And, we both recognized that sooner or later, our bodies cant keep up with our minds.
But now, you are free, with sunny skies, plenty of oxygen, and strength you didnt know you had!! Someday we will visit again, and even though you can throw your cane away now Jimmy, why not keep it by your side, just because it is you.
Family, thank you for sharing a wonderful man with all of us. He truly loved his family, and always had a great story to tell about all of you.
RIP Jimmy...
Dick
Dear Bertha and family, Jimmy was most of the time a good memory in our lives as we grew up together as cousins right across State Street from each other. But I remember him with a smile as I have read the memories of others and I can see Jimmy with a smile on his face. He, Glenda, Mike, Helen and Nancy are my best memories.

I was small I would go to the Guard with mama, latching onto her skirt tail in awe of all the hustle and bustle of the office. Jimmy was so sweet to talk with me giving me courage to turn loose of her skirt so he could buy me a Coke (6 cents at the time). He was a lifelong friend. Always happy when we ran into each other in our post Guard years. I always knew he loved me and I loved him. Grateful for a short visit with him the day before he passed.
Bertha and Family. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through this great sorrow of missing Jim. He was so highly thought of in our community. He will long be remembered.
I met Jimmy many years ago when I was a carrier for the Daily Guard newspaper. We have always been friends the last 30 years shared as neighbors. He always brought a smile to my face because I knew we were going to have a great conversation and some laughs. I will truly miss him. Prayers to Bertha and the family.
Jimmy was the heart and soul of the Batesville Guard for 60 years. It was a fortunate day indeed for the Jones family when he rode that horse up to apply for a paper route. Thank you for sharing him with us. He will be dearly missed.ðŸ™ðŸ¼

He was a mentor to not just me, but everyone that worked with him over the years. He left a huge footprint that few can follow. My prayers are with you all.
Oh Bertha and family, I did not know Jimmy was so near to passing. I am holding you in my heart. I'll treasure the stories he told, and the time when he posed with our museum's fishing exhibit (with his frog gig) during a museum program. But most of all... the hours he devoted years ago in cleaning and repairing metal objects that were donated to the museum. Sending love.
