Patricia Ann Freeman Jones

of Batesville, AR

October 7, 1935 - May 22, 2022

Patricia Ann Freeman Jones, age 86, of Batesville, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2022. She was born October 7, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan to Earl Ross and Leno Samantha (Dixie) Freeman.

She spent her early years in Webster Grove, Missouri where she went to school and later worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. While she was living in St. Louis she met her future husband, O.E. Jones, who was a student at George Washington University School of Dentistry. The couple married August 31, 1957.

After they moved back to Batesville, O.E. setup his dental practice and Pat stayed home raising two sons and two daughters in their home on Water Street, the Wycough-Jones house. The family occupied the home until O.E.'s death in 2018.

As her children got older, Pat took an interest in the Jones family newspaper, the Batesville Guard. She worked there as manager until 2018 when her health began to decline.

She was elected by the Arkansas Press Association to serve as President in 1995 and stayed active on its board for several more years. Her association with the Guard became her passion as the children left home. O.E. let her take the reigns but was there to advise her when needed.

Patricia was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of Chapter Z, PEO and Batesville Junior Auxiliary, serving as president for both organizations.

She was skilled in baking, knitting and gardening, and had impeccable taste in clothes. She was devoted to those she loved most, her husband, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Oscar Eve Jones IV (Beth) of Batesville and James Ross Jones (Lua) of Batesville; two daughters, Jena Jones (John Rone) of Batesville and April Phillips (Steve) of Little Rock; one brother, Ross Freeman of Tulsa, Oklahoma and a sister-in-law, Josephine Cargill Krug; eleven grandchildren, Trevor, Jared and Lauren Jones, John Baird (Jessica), Samantha Phillips Smith (Ram), Jacob Phillips, Tyler Patrise Burt (Charlie), Casey Carroll McClellan (William), Sidney Jones (Randall Warn), Terran Jones Gates (Cyle), Emily Jones Bruner (Harrison); seven great-grandchildren, Nora, Clay and Thomas Gates, Frankie June McClellan, Charles Ralph Burt, Claire and Cora May Baird and three nephews, Ross Freeman, Chris Freeman and Brett Freeman and one niece, Tricia Cargill Zelasko.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dr. Oscar Eve (O.E.) Jones, and her granddaughter, Jessica Jones Goff.

A memorial service will be at 2:00pm Thursday, May 26, 2022 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with Rev. Jim McDonald officiating.

Visitation is from 12:00pm until 1:30pm at the Roller-Crouch Funeral Home in Batesville.

Pat was my godmother...such a beautiful smile and such a magnificent voice in church. Loved growing up knowing her. I am so grateful to have had her as a part of my life growing up. She will be very much missed by so many but you can bet her friends Shirley McCaleb, Betty B, Nancy Stalker and so many others reached out to hug her when she arrived to her next life. Pat you will be incredibly missed. May your journey to your next life be one of peace.

Pat Jones was a positive force, class act and highly-regarded leader in the Arkansas Press Association. We admired her leadership and the high standards she held at the Batesville Guard. She gave her best and brought out the best in those around her. She and O.E. were also very likable and lots of fun. Her passing makes us sad, but we are grateful to have known her. Sending prayers for the Jones family.

Dr. O. E. & Pat Jones were two of my most favorite people in all of Batesville. They were good people and they always treated me like family. This world was a better place with the two of them in it. They were a beautiful couple and now together once again. Pat, I will always love and miss you!

The. Best. Boss. Ever. Was with the Guard for nearly 30 years. She always treated me well and gave great advice on occasion. “You catch more flies with honey” with a Pat Jones signature smiley face was on the board forever. Hard to remember her without a smile on her face. I know it is said a lot, but truly, the world is a little less friendly and gracious now.

Oscar, Ross,, Jenna and April,

It is hard to describe how much your mother meant to me. She was enormously supportive during a really terrible time in my life. I worked for Pat twice in full time positions and three times in temporary positions. She offered to of free advice, even when it was something I didn't wanted here. Not long after my mother died, when I was have problems with a couple of decisions, Pat told me she was going to take my mom's place for few minutes. She said, "I am going to talk to you like your mother would." I love her very much.

My prayers are with you as you go through the next few days.

God bless you Pat. You can rest easy.
