Catherine Johnston

of Benton, AR

March 6, 1927 - May 22, 2022

In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 22, 2022, Catherine Johnston died at her residence in Benton, Arkansas, at the age of 95.

Catherine, born in Lonoke, Arkansas, in 1927, was the third child for James and Ida Frances Spradling. She grew up in the Beautiful Home, Long Creek, Uno and Grubbs communities in Arkansas. She married George Johnston in 1946 and together they raised five children Barbara, Joan, Elaine, Dewayne and Dale.

She quit school to care for her younger siblings after the illness and death of her mother. Though she did not receive a High School Diploma, she continued to passionately learn as much as she could about academics and current events. Through studying her daughters' accounting books, she learned and did the accounting for the family's self-employed business. She became a tax consultant with H & R Block and worked every tax season for many years. Later, after moving to Alabama, she studied and earned her GED and attended a Jr. College. She was an avid quilter. She produced many quilts and wall hangings, some for each of her children and grandchildren, some commissioned and some just for her own pleasure. After the death of her husband, George, she became interested in their families' histories and began doing genealogical research and working on the family trees. She was also into politics. Before she lost her sight, she researched who political candidates were and their stands on issues, and then what they were doing in Washington. When she could no longer see the computer screen, she constantly listened to the radio to learn her information. She continued to stay up-to-date on most of the current issues and she was happy to discuss them with you. Her faith in God was very important to her. She felt her most important thing to do was to know the Bible. If you couldn't find a scripture, all you had to do was tell her what you were looking for and she could tell you where to find it in the Bible. She loved discussions on spiritual and Biblical topics and would adamantly defend her stance on scripture.

Catherine is preceded in death by her husband, George T. Johnston; son, Dewayne Johnston; parents, James (Jim) and Ida Frances Spradling; sisters, Maxine and Shirley; brothers, J.R, Elvon and Kenneth.

She is survived by three (3) daughters, Barbara Kitchens of Bryant, AR, Joan Terral of Fayetteville, AR and Elaine White (Rodney) of Benton AR; and one (1) son, Dale Johnston. Also surviving are eight (8) grandchildren, Jessica Kitchens McDonald (Chris), Tamara Terral Black, Stephanie Terral Gober, Rebecca Terral Janes (Henry), Terry Justin Terral, Tiffany Terral, Daniel White (Erin) and Adam White (Amber); thirteen (13) great-grandchildren and four (4) great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Service will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at Roller-Alcoa Funeral Home in Benton, Arkansas, with Pastor Rodney White officiating. Graveside Service and burial will be at 1:00 pm, Friday, May 27, 2022, at Stewartville Cemetery, Stewartville/Sylacauga, Alabama, with Pastor Mickey Mullins officiating.
