She taught elementary grades for 38 years beginning at age 18 in a one room country schoolhouse. She was loved and respected by students, parents and colleagues alike. She used her artistic ability to make many backdrops for school plays, costumes and teach art to her many students. Sewing was a skill she mastered at a young age and used this remarkable ability to make clothes, uniforms, and dance costumes for her children.
