Dr. William N. Jones, 87, of Little Rock passed away Monday, November 29, 2021. He was born to Dr. Curtis W. and Rosina Jones on March 4, 1934 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Bill graduated high school from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine from Tulane University in New Orleans.
From 1963-65, Bill was a Captain in the U.S. Medical Corps in Colorado. Upon returning to his home state, ''little Billy Jones from Benton,'' as he often self-deprecatingly referred to himself, started his private practice in dermatology. For fifty-four years, he saw patients in the same buttercup yellow office in Little Rock's Doctors Building. In his two ''exam rooms,'' furnished with memorabilia from Canadian fishing trips, Bill greeted every patient like a friend, so much so that his office secretaries, the same two who stayed with him for decades, knew to pad each patient's appointment slot for extended conversation.
Over his career, Bill was on staff at St. Vincent Infirmary, Baptist Medical Center, UAMS, and the Doctors Hospital and volunteered as a Professor of Dermatology at UAMS every Thursday for over thirty years. He participated in the national medical community with membership in the American Academy of Dermatology and as delegate to the American Medical Association, as well as local membership in the Arkansas Medical Society (President, 1990-91) and Arkansas Dermatological Society (President, 1970).
Bill gave to his community as chair for the Coalition for a Healthier Arkansas, on the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement Policy Board, and as Dermatological Consultant for Youth Homes of Arkansas. He was a particularly passionate advocate during the AIDS crisis-working on the Governor's Task Force on AIDS and the State Board of Health AIDS Advisory Committee-and against smoking with the Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Advisory Board. Bill was the recipient of the Arkansas Hospital Association Distinguished Service Award, Arkansas Medical Society's Asklepion Award for leadership and service, and Pulaski County Medical Society's Don Quixote Award.
Bill was a member of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, serving on the Administrative Board and as Sunday School President. In the course of being Secretary, Director, Program Chairman, and Paul Harris Fellow, he introduced the gender and racial integration of the West Little Rock Chapter of Rotary International. As a Boy Scout Cub Master and Assistant Scout Master, Bill earned the Scouter's Key, Eagle Scout Award, National Wood Badge Award, and Silver Beaver Award.
A renaissance man, Bill enjoyed tennis, Pilates, gardening, playing the piano, rock collecting, and tying his own fishing flies. Family and friends can recite by heart his animated stories about his ''once in a lifetime'' annual salmon fly-fishing trips with fellow ''George River Rats,'' hunting for Civil War relics across the South, and cooking Bananas Foster at Ruthie's and his infamous New Year's Eve parties.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of fifty-four years, Ruth Chambers Jones; son-in-law, Tim Boe; and brother, Dr. Robert Jones. He is survived by daughter Susan Boe of Little Rock and sons Mark Jones and wife Amber of Alexander, Stephen Jones and wife Christine of Houston, and David Jones and wife Jan of Benton; grandchildren Elaine Ruth Boe, Vivian Boe, Lauren Jones, Amy Jones, Alex Jones, and Grace Jones; and brother Dr. Curtis Jones, Jr. His family thanks Annette Wilson for many years of dedication to their father and family.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 11, 2021, at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Friday, 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home. The family requests everyone wear a mask.

I just now came across Dr. Jone’s obituary. So sorry to hear of his death. I was a patient of Dr. Jones from the time I was a teenager. So was my mother, wife and daughter. He was a great physician and he was so kind. He treated us like family. My heart aches for his family, friends and former patients. He was a great doctor, family man and just a marvelous human being. I will always have fond memories of Dr. Jones.

I am deeply sad to hear of Dr. Jones passing. He was my dermatologist for over forty years and I was so fortunate to be a patient of his. Dr. Jones was kind, considerate and very attentive. He always spent time with you and never rushed thru your appointment. He and his office staff made you feel like family. When Dr. Jones retired I literally cried. My heart goes out to his family. May they take comfort that heaven has received such a sweet soul.

I'll always remember lunches in the Doctor's Hospital Physicians Dining Room and Medical Society meetings with Dr Jones, I learned so much from him. He has served as a mentor and role model for so many younger physicians as he provided excellent care for his patients and advocated for Arkansans and Arkansas' physicians. It has been an honor to know and work with him.

I was so sad to learn that Dr. Jones had passed away. He started seeing my daughter when she was a toddler in 2000 and continued seeing her as she grew up, until he retired. He was always kind and engaging with her, and he was brilliant in his diagnoses & treatments. We trusted him completely. I am sorry for your loss. He definitely had a positive impact on our family. What a wonderful legacy!

His wife, Ruthie, was a neighbor in Benton. I was the organist at their wedding. Loved them both. Dr. Bill's father delivered me as he was the doctor for our family. I am also an alumni of Castle Heights Military Academy. So very sorry for the families loss of such a fine man.

Bill was my dearest friend for the past 30 plus years. Each year we spent a week on the George River in the Ungava region of Canada sharing our joy of salmon fishing. Dr. Jones was the doctor for both me and my wife for a number of years. He was great. And we always enjoyed visiting with him when he had dinner at Trio’s. He was such a generous tipper that the waiters took turns waiting on him. He told me “They need the money more than I do.†We will miss seeing him.

I worked in the Doctors Building for many years and always enjoyed seeing Dr. Jones in the hallways or elevators. I was also a patient of his as many of my relatives were. He was such a calming influence if there was a concern about a dermatology issue. However, the thing I remember most is the many chuckles we had when he would share something funny, when we ran into each other. He was such an asset to the medical field for many, many years.

Dr. Jones served his colleagues for 50 years or more as a champion and fighter for his profession through his efforts as a leader of the Arkansas Medical Society. His love of medicine and his patients guided everything he accomplished and fought for. He leaves a lasting impression on this organization and the physicians it serves.
There was, and always will be, only one Dr. Bill Jones. Our condolences to his family. We rejoice in the fact that he will be re-united with the love of his life, Ruthie.

Dr Bill treated me for acne back in the 60s. Such a nice man and good physician. My dad graduated high school with his brother, Dr Bob Jones. I was treated by his dad Dr Curtis Jones Sr and brother Dr Curtis Jones Jr. he will be sorely missed.
