James Russell SampleI am a Veteran.

of Marion, AR

June 16, 1931 - September 19, 2021

James Russell Sample of Marion, Arkansas was born on June 16, 1931 in Hazen, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents Leslie and hazel Sample of Biscoe, Arkansas, one brother Don Sample of West Memphis, Arkansas and one son Tony Russell Sample of Marion, Arkansas as well as his grandson Matthew Scott Sample of Marion, Arkansas. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Daily Sample, one son Michael David Sample (Vickie), one grandson Michael Barrett Sample (Leslie), one granddaughter Elizabeth Danner Williams (Neal), five great grandchildren; Kaylabeth Sample, Merritt Sample, Shepard Sample, Ross Stanley Williams and Apperson Williams, one brother Bobby Lee Sample (Janice) of Biscoe, Arkansas and many friends.

James loved the lord and his church family. James was a member of Marion United Methodist Church since 1959. James and Dorothy built their home on the bank of Island 40 Chute, Daily's Boat Dock, in the fall of 1958. For 52 years He and Dorothy welcomed many friends and customers to fish and enjoy the gardens on their property. After a big flood in April-May 2011 their home was unlivable. They then built north of Marion, Arkansas. James served 4 years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

Memorials can be made to the Marion United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Dorothy and Mike, Please know that I am thinking of you now. James was a good man who was loved by many. My mom always loved seeing him when he took her order for the Hullabaloo barbecue. He leaves a great legacy.

Heaven’s Gates are open wide to welcome such a loving Christian as James. He was a fun fishing buddy to me for over 35 years. My late wife, Eva Mae, was best friends with Dorothy during this time.

James will be missed as much as he was loved. God bless and keep the precious family he leaves behind. We love all of you, Bill Spencer

My prayers are with Mrs. Dorothy and all the family. What a special Godly man Mr. James was. I always loved visiting Mike and the family at their old place - fishing in the summers, sledding in (some of) the winters.
Mr. James touched many lives and will be sorely missed.

My father Doyle Carter and James were great friends since their boyhood days in Devalls Bluff, AR.
Our families spent a great deal of time together during my growing up years. I have great memories of fish fries, family dinners, traveling to Alaska, holidays, and much more. James, Dorothy, Mike, and Tony were special to us and the time we spent together are some of my favorite memories. James was a wonderful Christian man and he will be missed.

Mrs Dorothy and Family,
You and James were the very first people that Bob and I met many years ago when first came to MUMC. Mr. James was a great, God loving man that also loved you dearly. Marion has lost a great member of our community. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.

Mr Sample was a friend of mine and I will miss him bunches. May Our Lord be with those left to cherish his memories. Whether it was on the bank, getting bait at the Red Barn or at Church, he always had some good words to share with me..

We loved James so much. We love Dorothy and we know how much she has cared for him for so long. It is truly a blessing that he has gone to be with his Lord. What a truly wonderful man James was and served his church as usher and other jobs. He will be missed!

One of the nicest gentlemen that I ever met. No matter where I seen him, he always remembered my name and asked about my son.
Like everyone else around this area, I could tell a hundred fishing stories about him.
RIP, Mr. James. Heaven’s gates opened wide for your arrival.
