Gene and my late husband, Marion, played music and were on the road together for many years. They met thru a phone operator friend who put them together and a lifelong friendship began. Over 59 years, Gene kept track of all the folks and families he was close to during his adventures. He was 'honorary' God father to our son, Matt.
He was a kind and devoted soul. He will be missed.

I remember Gene as a good guy and probably didn't know him as well as many others. I do remember one night he asked Alan Posey to teach him some bass guitar because he had a chance to go on tour with Will Pop Jones, who needed a bass player. Later he joined Conway's band as a bass player because of illness of regular bassist. I hope my memory is correct about that.
I certainly would have attended his services had I not been in Louisville, KY., for a car show.

I am so sorry to learn of Genes death. My parents, my children and I spent a week at Twitty City and went to many Conway and Conway and Loretta concerts. We always had so much fun with the Hugheys. Gene and John were such gentleman and well respected by all. They were Christian men that showed that in every way. Gene and I started first grade together at the old Jefferson school on Porter Street and were always in Sunday School and church together. Nell, I think of you often. I will always remember how much Gene loved you and Charles and your mother and how ya’ll took care of each other. I feel sure that when Gene met Jesus, he said, “Well done my good and faithful servant. I will keep your family in my prayers

Our condolences to the family of Gene Hughey. We shared many good memories back in our younger days playing music at his house with the different bands that used their house to practice! We worked at Safeway together also. Over the years, he would stop by to see me when he came in to visit from his travels with Conway Twitty. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a great friend.

Eugene "Gene" was part of the Class of 1959 at Central High School and attended two reunions that I know of. I last saw him in 2009 at our 50-year reunion, but talked with him on the phone from time to time. He was a soft-spoken classic gentleman. I saw him perform once with Conway Twitty's band in San Antonio. My deepest sympathy to family and friends. Our loss is surely Heaven's gain.
