of Mabelvale, AR
August 21, 1939 - May 25, 2021
Richard Squires of Mabelvale, Arkansas died Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Marie Squires and his brother Bobby Squires.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Squires of 57 years; 2 daughters, Dena (Mark) Dixson of Benton and Tracy (Gabriel) Decker of Horseshoe Bend; 6 grandchildren, Levi, Luke (Hannah), and Kathleen Lindsley, Jessica Dixson, Julian (Sarahi) Decker, Skye (Jose) Pérez Muñiz; 2 sisters, JoAnn Forbes and Judy Kay (Ed) Savage; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Richard was born at home in Little Rock, AR. He attended Baseline Elementary, Mabelvale Jr. and High School. Shortly after high school, Richard joined the US Army where he served for 6 months active duty and 3 ½ years in the reserves. After serving his country, he became a union carpenter. He worked for Herb Davis Construction for 25 years. He was active in Temple Missionary Baptist Church and then Village Creek Baptist Church. He was always passionate about his hobbies, hunting, fishing, and gardening. He especially loved to fish with his buddy Bill Hawkins and spending time with the family, especially his grandchildren. He would take his grandsons Levi and Luke hiking and teach them woodsman skills. He loved watching the St. Louis Cardinals and the local college sports teams.
Richard never met a stranger and always made people feel welcome. He was one of the friendliest people and loved to sit and visit with you.
To say he was an avid gardener is an understatement. He had a garden from the time he owned his place. His all-organic garden was built through his hard work and attention to detail. Richard willingly shared his garden with anybody who wanted to come pick. He loved animals, tame or wild. The family considered him to be the hardest working, strongest man they knew.
In lieu flowers, please send donations to Village Creek Baptist Church, 13224 Sardis Road Mabelvale, Arkansas 72103. Graveside services will be held at Pinecrest Memorial Park, Alexander, AR at 1:30 p.m., Friday, May 28, 2021.
