of Conway, AR
December 1, 1951 - May 14, 2021
Nancy Jo Penny, 69, went to her heavenly home on Friday, May 14, 2021. She was born December 1, 1951, to the late John L. Clements and Evelyn Clements.
Nancy was a lifelong resident of Conway, graduated from Conway High School and obtained bachelor and master degrees in Math Education from the University of Central Arkansas. She spent most of her 30+ year career as a high school math teacher at CHS, where she was well-loved by and dedicated to her students - and easily recognizable driving her 1968 blue and white Ford Ranger pickup. Nancy was also a lifelong member of Second Baptist Church and happily shared her faith and gift of teaching as a nursery volunteer. She had quite the green thumb, was an active Master Gardener and was always on the lookout for a new plant or cutting for her back yard. She loved to spend time with her grandsons, to travel and to exercise with her Jazzercise group. And, of course, she loved Toad Suck Daze and selling chocolate covered frozen bananas with her Beta Sigma Phi sorority sisters.
Nancy was preceded in death by her father, John L. Clements, and her son, Jason Brett Penny. She is survived by her mother, Evelyn Jones Clements; her brother, Tom Clements (Gina) of Sykesville, MD; her daughter, Tarah Buckner (Tyler) of Denver, CO, and two grandsons, Rowan and Conall Buckner.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 21, at 1:00 PM at Second Baptist Church, with visitation starting at noon. A time for fellowship will follow the memorial. If you will be gardening afterward (Nancy would approve), feel free to wear your overalls.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Conway Public Schools Foundation at https://cpsfoundation.com/give, or call (501) 267-4078.
Nancy and I taught in the same department at Conway High School in the late 80's and early 90's. Nancy loved teaching math and enjoyed her antique truck. I was saddened to hear of her passing but now her beautiful smile is lighting up Heaven.
Still remember your Algebra Lessons, you were my favorite CHS teacher. Rip Mrs. Penny
Miss you Sister!
Tara,
I just loved your mom! I was lucky enough to have her as my math teacher 2 years in a row. She made math fun & for the first time I really enjoyed the subject. She was witty & I loved running into her after I graduated.
You’ll be in my thoughts. She will be missed.
Tarah - So very sorry for your loss. Your mother was a very special woman.
If joie de vivre, whimsy, love, and truth told with easy laughter could keep someone alive, Nancy Jo Penny would have lived forever. In a world where that isn’t enough, may you know that she is eternal for those who were lucky enough to be in her sphere even for a moment. Tarah, you are her magnum opus.
Love you all.
Mrs. Penny was my math teacher at Conway high a couple years in a row. She was a no nonsense teacher that spoke truth to students. I was bad at math and did not like it. However, she made it clear that my lack of effort was reflected by my grade. I began coming in every morning before school for extra help. I was able to take my low c to a high b because she was willing to give of her time. I’m grateful for her and sorry for your loss.
Nancy was such a sweetheart. I enjoyed our years together as Master Gardeners. She always had a beautiful smile and kind words. Sending prayers to her family and friends as I know she will be missed terribly. I’m sure she’s already planting beautiful flowers in heaven â¤ï¸ðŸ™ðŸ¼â¤ï¸
Tarah, your mom was a real fighter. Conway Public Schools was blessed to have her as a teacher. Nancy was always positive and eager to help. She had many friends who will miss her

Ms. Nancy was like another Aunt to me and I will always be thankful for the time she spent with my sister and I. I will be praying for all of you.
Ms. Penny was one of a kind. I never saw her without a smile on her face and a bounce in her step. Her brightness will be missed. I read somewhere that learning from a good teacher is an experience that can sometimes be better than education itself. She was one of the best teachers because she knew how to bring out the best in her students. Thinking and praying for you all.
So sorry for your loss. She was a great teacher and she will be missed. I appreciate the efforts she gave to me as a student
Nancy was a wonderful neighbor and friend, She would always wave when she drove by
or stop and visit if we were outside when she walked by. Her students loved her and she
was a favorite of many. Tarah, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers now and in the days ahead.
Prayers and condolences to Tarah and family.
Prayers for the family,

(A fellow Jazzerciser)
Evelyn and Family, Deeply sorry for your loss. Keeping you all lifted up in prayer.
How I will miss this beautiful lady. She could make me smile just talking to her on the phone. Nancy was one of the first woman to play on our church softball team. This is where we became good friends. How we all had a blast, & great fellowship doing this. After a game we would head over to the water slide on Hwy 65 to cool off. Nancy would be the first one to start a train going down the slide. Tara, you were just a tot then, and we all thought you were one of us, sliding down the slide. Nancy had more "energy" and creativity than anyone else I know. If you had a problem just give her a call, & she would be there for you, truck and all. From church to sports to teaching together she made a big impression in my life. Nancy was a living example of a Godly woman. She "is" loved and will always be remembered as making a positive impact in so many people's lives. With my deepest sympathy to you Tara and to the family.
Sending prayers and love for peace and comfort. Praising God for your mom/Grancy and her beautiful light!
Tarah, Tyler, Rowan, Conall, and everyone who was touched by Nancy,
Nancy will be missed by all who had her as a part of their lives. We had the rare opportunity to live as guests in her basement for a few months while we were looking for a home in the Denver area. Although it was hard seeing her struggle with her ongoing health problems, it was a joy to watch her be near her grandsons (our nephews) and love and teach them every day. Our dog and cat were also her roommates during this time and although they were not the best behaved animals by any stretch of the imagination, you could tell how much she enjoyed them being around and spoiled them. They never were hungry when Nancy was around. When we would complain about Clive's peculiar tendencies her response was "He's a cat!" as though that explained it all.
She also wrapped gifts and decorate gifts with whatever she had around the house - newspaper, strips of old papers made into bows, etc. Her resourcefulness was not only unparalleled but the results were beautiful!
She will be missed, but more importantly - remembered.
Tarah, I am so sad for you and your family. Nancy will be missed by so many but none more than you.
I hope you can find comfort in knowing she touched so many lives and made so many of us smile and laugh. Hers was a life well lived.
My condolonces to all of Nancy's family. I first met Nancy as a student in my Italian class for the community at UCA, around 2007...she learned her Italian very well and when she visited Italy I received a memorable card I have since saved. At the time she also came to my garden to give me a hand and theat's when I fell in love with that most unique antique blue and white pick-up I would always identify with Nancy. I would look her up at the hight school when I did substitute teaching there, she nade teaching math look so easy. When she joined the Master Gardner team I was so happy to see her again and to shre laughter with her once more at her wonderful sense of humor. No one has compares with her management of the plant sale, and I to;d her so. Her jokes and cheerfull personality made it the best....especially when she told everyone that she was not a mean person....(she did the job well and acauired that title jockingly ). We aslo compared notes of Colorado since I've been living partly in the west Rockies for over 2 years. I was hoping we'd meet there. My heart sank with the surprise of not having her with us any longer. Rest in peace dear lady. Thank you for being another special person in my life.
Dearest Tarah, Suzanne and I are so sorry for your loss. Wish we could be there with you and Tyler and the boys. We will keep you in our prayers. Love you Clester and Suzanne
My deepest condolences. Nancy was such a great lady. She will be missed!
Prayers and blessings!! My condolences for your loss !!
My prayers are with you. Nancy was a uniquely good person. I have so many good memories involving Nancy. Her pet rabbit was precious. I’m sorry for your loss.
Remember Nancy through the years, she was my classmate Tommy’s younger sister. We all went to Ellen Smith as children. I know I saw her through the years she taught my two daughters. So sorry for your loss.
Nancy and I shared many students during our years at CHS. She always had high expectations for all of her students but she also went the extra mile to help them succeed. I always knew we would share a laugh anytime I entered her room. Oh, how she loved her students and her own kids. Nancy will be missed!
Dearest Tarah, we are so very sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers remain with you and your family.
Love,
Chipper and Donna
Ms. Penny was such a special person. While geometry and I were never friends, Ms. Penny's passion for teaching and love for her students made me work hard to conquer that class. I can still see her selling corn dogs at the fair 20 or more years ago. My prayers go out to family, friends, and former students. Our lives were enriched because Nancy Penny was in them. Rest in peace Ms. Penny.
Tarah, so sorry for you loss. I saw Nancy at Wal Mart before I moved and we talked and laughed for a long time. It brought back a flood of 30+ memories that we have shared. I will miss het. I remember so many crazy tines. Trips and camps and workshops unreal. She will always be in my mind. She so loved you and get grands. The world was a better place with her around.
Tarah and other Family and Friends of Nancy Penny-
I was so sad to learn of Nancy's passing. I have many fond and precious memories of her as a constant and present personality from my childhood. While I never had her as a teacher at CHS, I believe that she was one of my Sunday school or Vacation Bible School teachers and ever present at Spirit Wind events. But more recently, I was moved by the love and friendship she shared with my mother while playing dominoes. Nancy made a Christmas ornament for Nelmer years ago that continues to hang on our family Christmas tree. I was tickled when I received a call one day at work that she and her family were at the Library for a visit and curious if I was available to chat. Nancy has made such an invaluable impact on Conway and Second Baptist Church, and I like many others are so very blessed to have known her.
I am sorry to hear of Ms. Penny’s passing. She was my Trig / Precal teacher, and I thoroughly loved her class. Without her, perhaps I don’t go on to be an engineer. She inspired many, and through her teaching the world changed.
May God provide the peace the Penny and Clements families need at this time. Nancy will be missed by all who were blessed to know her.

Forever I will be your Ma-Ratha Kathleen. Lol. Maybe Kathleen was Jevon's name. I cant even remember now. What I do remember is your love for me, math and all things CHS. You will forever be with me and in my stories of my favorite teachers. You taught me a lot about life and math. I hated math, but you made me hate it a little less. I love you to the moon and back. It's not forever it's just goodbye for now.
Ms. Penny will be missed. She was one of my favorite teachers. She was hard yet fair. I just re-read the message she wrote in my senior memory book back in 1998 and her words made me smile bringing back some good memories!!! She always spoke to me years after high school anywhere our paths crossed. Sending my thoughts and prayers to the family during this difficult time.
Deepest sympathies to the family during this time of loss. I was in high school with Nancy. While I didn't know her that well, she was always nice to everyone and others. It didn't surprise me that she became a teacher.
I not only had the pleasure of having Nancy Penny as my math teacher in high school but also was able to spend 10 years teaching with her at CHS -that was Fun - she al Amy’s made me smile. She was a treasure to Conway and will be sorely missed. I smile now with many fond memories of her wit. Please know my condolences are with your family.
Tarah,
I am so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. You were definitely the light of her life. She was my FAVORITE teacher and the one who really made me love math. She tutored me and several other students for Trig and Pre-Cal our senior year on her own time. She did this because she believed in us and wanted us to succeed. As a 2BC member, I got to often see her on Sundays and she kept both of my boys in the nursery. That was always so special to me. She was not a woman of fluff and normally got right to the point, one of the many things I loved about her. She will be truly missed. Love and prayers to you and your family.
She will be missed!
One of best neighbors, Jazzercisers and friend!
I am so sad to hear that Ms. Penny has passed. She was my neighbor and my teacher when I lived in Conway. She made math classes fun and I always felt like they were my best subject because of her. As her neighbor I got to help watch her sweet Puddy and help water all of her amazing flowers when she went out of town. I still have many cards that she would leave me that she signed with her signature “Penny†along with Puddy’s name. I am praying for the family during this time. I’m thankful I got to know her during my time there.
Thoughts and prayers are with the family. This lady was the reason I passed Algebra in high school. I know she meant a lot to many!
It always brought a smile to my face to see Ms. Penny driving her truck around Conway. She lived down the street from me and I was a student of hers. What a great person and a wonderful teacher.
Tarah, Tyler, Rowan and Conal. I was so sorry to hear about Nancy. My prayers go with you all through the next weeks and months. You can reassure yourselves that she is now pain free and at Peace with our Heavenly Father. Shed the tears, relive your precious memories and continue to make her proud by the way you live out your own life. Love, Meme Stephens.
Dear Tarah, Tyler, Rowan and Conall,
May it bring you great comfort to know that your Nancy is with my mother tending to the gardens in heaven! They have never been happierâ£ï¸ðŸŒ¹ðŸŒ¼
Sending our deepest sympathy and love to Tarah, Tyler, Rowan & Conall, and to Nancy’s dear Mother and family, close friends, former students, and all who cared so much for her.

Ms Penny was the teacher that every student wanted. She always had a smile on her face. Thank you so much for being apart of our lives as a Wampus Cat. You will greatly be missed.
Tarah, I am so saddened by the loss of your mom. I have many good memories that involve you, Amy, Brownie Scouts, Ida Burns, the high school and on and on. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Nancy was one of the first people I recognized from Conway school days when I started attending 2BC and she immediately invited me to dinner the following Monday night at the pizza place on Hogan. Truly a caring and sweet person through and through. She will be missed by so many!
I remember Ms penny, she is the only reason that I passed geometry. Such a nice person,I'm so very sorry for the families loss. My heart and prayers are with you.

Dear Nancy, You brought so much life and sunshine to everything you did. I was a teacher in training with you at Conway High and then in the Master Gardeners with you. You will be so missed but you left a strong legacy.
Tarah Jo (does anyone ever call you that now), this is another one of those times when I say, “Why haven’t I kept up with my friends†I am so beyond sad to hear about your mom. I have so often thought of funny things she would say at the gymnastics center, she would always make me laugh. I often come across pictures of you mixed in with all of the gym and Kicks pictures that I have.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
Tara, Tommy & Evelyn, my heart is breaking, I miss Nancy so much.
There few as positive as Nancy, never a grumble or complaint. She was a living example of Christ.
I cherish our trips and times together. Your family was the first family I remember meeting when daddy moved us to Conway (he &John had known each other for years). We had always considered y'all family and were treated like family by John & Evelyn. Love y'all please stay in touch.
Oh Nancy, you will be missed. I'm so sorry. Way too early, way too early.
Tarah, Your mother was a sweet neighbor of ours for many years and we will surely miss her--seeing her working in her yard to keep it neat and beautiful or coming and going in her "blue truck". We are so sorry for your loss and praying for comfort for you and your family at this difficult time.
Nancy was a special friend and lady. I can hear her calling “ Banana, banana, banana. Get your chocolate covered banana†at Toad Suck. She will be missed by all who knew her. Loving thoughts and prayer for the family. ðŸ™ðŸ™ðŸ™
My condolences to Ms. Penny's girls and family. She was so much more than a Geometry teacher and Master Gardener. She was such a good, kind person and will truly be missed. May God bless and keep you close during this difficult time.
I’m so sorry. Nancy joined Jazzercise after she retired and was always so much fun to be around. Everyone in class loved her so much. She will be missed!
Tarah I am sorry about the loss of your mom. i have many wonderful memories of you girls and your mom and the fun times we would have at the water slide. Prayers and love coming to you and your family.

To say that I’m heartbroken is an understatement. Ms. Penny….
My junior year I had Ms. Penny for Geometry and it just so happened to be after choir. I didn’t too much care for numbers, so as she wrote on the board, I sang. She would turn around and ask who was singing. I’d go silent and grin waiting for her to turn back around so that I could continue my performance. She never knew what she song was going to get, but it was usually rearranged and her name added.
One afternoon the choir had a competition to attend, but me being me, refused to disappoint Ms. Penny with my absence, so I got a cassette tape and recorded 50 minutes of me singing the songs I sang in class and she couldn’t have been more amused.
How ironic that although I didn’t like Math, she was my all-time favorite teacher and we kept in touch after my graduation. She babysat my children numerous times. Opening her arms wider with each new addition and I am so grateful that they knew her and for those memories.
Just one more conversation, one more laugh with that room brightening smile and to hear her call me a silly girl.
Thank you Tarah for sharing her with us; her presence made the world a better place. My thoughts and prayers are with you…
So sorry for your loss!
Ms. Penny you will be missed by so many people. We will miss your smile, your laugh and you bringing joy to everyone's life. I will miss seeing you in your old blue and white truck and not seeing you when you walk you little dog around the high school. Until we meet again, Love you.
A friend and coworker for several years at Conway High School. She was a delightful person and as Cindy said, gone too soon.
Mrs. Penny was such a lovely woman. There was not one day that I saw her that she did not have
a smile on her face when she saw me. I was not fortunate to have her in math class in high school because me and number just did not get along! My relationship with her stemmed as far back my elementary school years at Ida Burns Elementary. She was the mother of my classmate Tara Penny.
After high school, whenever I saw her, I always said, "Hey Mrs. Penny, do you still have that truck"
She told me later, that EVERYONE said that to her just like that when they saw her.
To be honest, that was how we associated her. That truck was in mint condition and it was just as beautiful as she was!
I am definitely going to miss seeing her. I want to take this time to thank her for always being so nice to me.
Ms. Penny was a more than just a teacher, she was a mentor and friend. She literally opened her home to me when I was a high school student in need of a place to land. I honor her memory and mourn her passing.
Nancy was the first teacher that I met at CHS. She became a great mentor and friend. I will not forget her kindness. She touched many lives during her time here on earth. My wish is that her family feels the peace and comfort that only can come from our Heavenly Father.
Evelyn,Tarah,Tom and family. My heart hurts for all of you. Nancy will be missed by so many. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Please let me know if I can do anything.
