Martha Marie Smith, 88, of Bay, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2021 at St. Bernards Hospital. She was born March 26, 1932 in Eastview, TN to Walter Marcus and Kate (McClain) Beakley. Mrs. Smith worked as a home remodeler and was a member of Broadway Ave Baptist Church in Bay. She loved sewing, arts and crafts, and gardening.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; one sister; and a daughter, Lillie Ann Wester.
Those left behind to cherish the memories of Martha include her husband of 69 years, Von Olan Smith; two sons, Don Olan (Connie) Smith and John David Smith; a daughter, Nora Lee (Bill) King; nine grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; a son-in-law, Doyle Wester; and a special family friend, Traci Ellington.
Church services will be 11 am Monday at Broadway Baptist Church, 205 W. Broadway in Bay with Rick Jensen officiating. Burial will follow at 12:30 pm at Pine Log Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 10 am until time of service.
Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
Per CDC guidelines, masks are required and social distancing to be observed.
was so saddened to hear of Mrs. Smiths passing. my grandson Kaleb next door neighbor loved her like a grandma. she was always giving him flowers to plant in his yard. we always bring her tomato plants from the school of course she would give him some when they got ripe. he loved helping her trim her bushes. she will truly be missed. i will miss her in the yard. I would always drive up talk a few min with her.. she was a lovely person. prayers for the family. she loved her family. loved her family gatherings she would always tell me.
martha u dont know how much this hurt me i remember coming to johns with traci(my mom) and we would see u outside doing work and lawn work and any kind of work you could find im so happy to have met u and see u john von don nora lee and the rest of the family and thank you ill miss u martha but i know your in heaven mowing the grass and planting flowers in gods house love you martha youll always be missed
Our street will never be the same without Martha. She was a strong independent women who spent so much time outside in her yard, cutting grass or planting flowers. One time my husband was out cutting grass and she taps him on the shoulder and says “ what kinda snake is this†Holding up a huge snake she had killed. She scared my husband to death because he’s afraid of snakes.... we sure were fond of her and our lives will not be the same without her. To Von and family, I am so sorry for your loss
