Dr. Mark D. Seefeld

of Little Rock, AR

January 18, 1953 - December 22, 2020

Dr. Mark D. Seefeld, age 67 years, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly near his home in Little Rock, Arkansas, on Tuesday, December 22, 2020.

Mark was born on January 18, 1953, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of the late Dr. Philip Henry Seefeld and Jeanne (Henkel) Seefeld.

Mark was a highly accomplished scientist and executive in the field of drug safety. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology in 1982.

During his distinguished career of 35+ years, Mark led efforts to ensure the safety of many promising new drugs and therapies. Most recently, Mark served as Vice President, Head of Toxicology at Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals in Madison, Wisconsin.

Beyond his substantial intellect and professional accomplishments, Mark was an easy-going and good-natured soul, who adored the companionship of his wife, Angie, and other loved ones and friends. Mark's personal interests and hobbies included University of Wisconsin football, golf, and especially mingling with friends and colleagues.

Mark was a profoundly generous and kind person with a quick wit and an easy smile. He routinely and inherently recognized and promoted the value of others. Above all else, Mark was a great and kind-hearted person who deeply cared about his loved ones, friends, and colleagues.

Mark's brilliant mind, loving soul, and kind demeanor will be sorely missed by his many friends and family.

Mark is survived by his wife, Angie Seefeld; his daughter, Lauren Swain (Sam); his brothers, John Seefeld (Mary) and Philip Seefeld, Jr. (Susan); his stepchildren, Jessica Duncan Johnston (Phillip), Lyndsay Carter (Grant), and Cole Wilson; and his grandchildren, Jack Swain, and Ann Marie and McCall Carter.

A future tribute and celebration of Mark's life will be planned for friends and family in the coming months. Memorial contributions to Arkansas Food Bank or Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin would be sincerely appreciated as both organizations were dear to him.

My wife, Jane and I first met Mark when he lived in the San Diego Area. We all played golf together and, later when we moved to Indiana, would stay with them when we would visit Southern California.
I worked in the Athletic Dept. at Indiana U. and, as such, we would banter back and forth regarding Indiana's and Wisconsin's football fortunes in the Big Ten and against each other.
Needless to say, we were deeply shocked with the news of his passing.
Our sincerest condolences to his family and friends for your loss

With great sympathy,

I wish to express my heartfelt sympathies to Angie and to all of Mark's family. This is a very hard loss and so unexpected as Mark was always so full of life, vibrant and really funny. He was a good friend and colleague and will be sorely missed. I can't imagine a tox meeting without catching up with Mark on life, family, and occasionally, the world of drug development. He was a good man, brought some sunshine and levity into the world, and left very fond memories for those of us that had the very good fortune to have known and worked with him.

Dear Angie and family,

It was with shock and great sadness that I heard the news of Mark's passing. Mark was a treasured member of the Arrowhead family. Working with him was such a pleasure. We all had the highest respect for his professional expertise and felt honored to have him at Arrowhead, developing therapies for patients with intractable diseases.

I'm so sorry Mark was not able to share the pleasures of retirement with you.

Deepest condolences,
Chris Wooddell

Dear Angie and family of Mark,
I am so sorry to hear of Mark's passing. I first met Mark in Reno, NV and enjoyed his good nature and infectious smile during work, but also on the golf course afterwards where I worked and served him his beloved Budweiser. He brought a lot of fun and wisdom to those around him. He will be sorely missed!
My thoughts and prayers with you during this difficult time.

Dear Angie and family,
Mark and I overlapped for several years at Arrowhead Madison until I left in late 2018 - but we stayed in touch from time to time. I loved his sense of humor, his wisdom, and his self-effacing modesty. He was a great colleague and I was shocked to hear the news. I'm sorry that you couldn't have a full happily retired life together with Mark.
I spoke with him just last month.
My condolences to you all. It is a very sad loss.

I first met Mark in 1979, when he was a graduate student in Dick Peterson's lab at the University of Wisconsin. Mark was a great asset to the lab both professionally and personally, and his beautifully elegant demonstration that TCDD causes a dose-related decrease in the body weight setpoint was a major contribution to our understanding of the mechanism of action of dioxins and related chemicals. I enjoyed Mark's sense of humor, both when we worked in the Peterson lab and in numerous meetings during his subsequent career. Deepest condolences to his loved ones.
