of Houston, TX

October 2, 1921 - December 22, 2020

Joseph Gilbert Weisberger Sr. (Joe) died on December 22, 2020 in Houston, Texas at the age of 99. He was born October 2, 1921 in Marvell, Arkansas, the son of Sam and Kate Weisberger.

Joe graduated from Marvell High School, Class of 1939. Following graduation, he attended business school in Memphis, TN and was employed by the DuPont Corporation for a short time before the start of World War II. He served in the US Army as a staff sergeant in the South Pacific, primarily New Caledonia and Pago Pago. After the war, he returned to Marvell and married Nina Hosey in 1951. He joined Erwin Ford in Marvell and became general manager and partner where he remained until his retirement. He was active in community affairs throughout his career including serving on the Marvell city council, Marvell VFW post, Rotary Club, Phillips County Community College board of trustees and the Phillips County library board.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Albert Weisberger, Leo Turner, and Weimar Turner, and grandson A. J. Weisberger. Surviving in addition to his wife Nina Weisberger, are his sons, Gil Weisberger and his wife Debra, Mark Weisberger and his wife Camille all of Houston, and five grandchildren, Joseph Weisberger III, Jessica Weisberger McMahon, Jack Weisberger, and Matt Weisberger, and five great grandchildren.

Joe was quiet and reserved but had a quick wit and a twinkle in his eyes and loved nothing more than spending time with his family, and having one of the nicest yards in Marvell. He worked hard to make Marvell a great place to live.

A family gathering was held on December 24th in Houston followed by a cremation. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, his remains will be interred at the Marvell Cemetery at a later date and a graveside memorial service will be held at that time.

Joe was an avid reader and was actively involved in developing the new Marvell Public Library. Those who wish to remember him in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the library, P.O. Box 625, Marvell, AR 72366.

Services will be directed by Roller-Citizens Funeral Home, West Helena, (870) 572-2571. Relatives and friends may sign the online guestbook at www.rollerfuneralhomes.com/westhelena.
