I just heard from his widow today that he had passed. I never had the honor to meet him in person, but she always speaks lovingly of him and appreciated him being in her life. I know the feeling was reciprocal.
When I was nine years old, Mr. Watts gave me, via his wife, a signed 1951 or 52 Yuma Panthers baseball program (I was told he played lower-level baseball as a younger gentleman) when he heard from her that I was a baseball fan always buying memorabilia at the store where she worked. I still treasure his generosity, and I wish all his loved ones all the best in these sorrowful times.
Please know that he was a hero to me as a young boy who loved baseball, but, more importantly, shall always be a hero to me for clearly being a kind, loving, and thoughtful person. I wish his friends and family well.
