Our family was blessed to know Stubby. He was one of my Dad's best friends from ANO. He was a great man and will be missed. Sending prayers for God's comfort and peace as you grieve his loss.
I was stationed on the USS Flasher when Stubby reported aboard. He became an excellent watch stander, submariner, and shipmate. He also already had a nickname. Condolences to his family, friends, and shipmates. Sailor rest your oar!
Shipmate on the Flasher for several years. Good man. Will be missed.
Stubby was a good man and I will be glad to see him again on the other side.
The first checkout I ever got from him was on the Hydrogen Seal Oil System. I could draw/discuss it etc. and thought I was ready for even Stubby. Well, it lasted for days with one lookup after another. Finally, I appeased the knowledge requirements of Stubby. But I really knew and understood the system after that thanks to him. As I watched Stubby sign his name in my qualification card after one of the hardest (maybe the hardest) checkouts of my life, it was a moment of relief, achievement, and celebration. I think I might have been even been happier than when I saw everyone sign off for us buying our first house.
Thank you Stubby for caring, your high standards, and your commitment to making people better.
We were so sad to hear this news. Rest in peace bro. See you on the other side. Sending love, thoughts and prayers to all.
I went to church with him at Pleasant Grove, Arkansas, he was a very good man, I know so many people will miss him. May he rest in peace!!!!!,
Stubby was my mentor in License class at Palo Verde, drove us all to be the best we could be. He cared. We kept in touch after I came to ANO, and he was always willing to help in any way. Will miss him and his friendship.
One of the signs of a life well lived is the impact you have on others, and clearly Stubby had a profound impact on all those he came in contact with. I had the joy of working with Stubby for years at ANO. Some random memories:
-I almost stepped on him one night in the control room. His back was bothering him and he was laying on the hard concrete floor behind the front control room panels (he was awake!) stretching out his back. I came around the corner too fast and almost stepped right in the middle of him. Of course, it was my fault!
-If you brought in ice cream or made an ice cream run, you had to buy Stubby Cherry Cordial. Of course, no one else really liked it so he had the whole thing pretty much to himself.
- Pearl snap shirts and pointed toe cowboy boots!
- Commitment to training. If you needed a checkout, he was always quick to oblige....and wear you out in the process!
Love and Prayers for the Family. Ray was one of a kind!
Stubby was my first Shift Manager. He was very influential in my career. I always knew I would never fail, because he was going to make sure I had all the help I needed. He was a great teacher and I know he has helped develop some great Operators.
Stubby and I reported to M Div on the Flasher in July 1972. It was a great honor to know and serve with him for 4 years. May God be with him and his family.
My Shift Manager back in the 80s. Thankfully, he wasn't willing that I be an average Operator and relentlessly drove me to be the best I could be. As tough as he was, it didn't prevent him from being a personal friend, having spent time with him off-hours many times. I fully agree with "Max" Gulick, that the best thing that ever happened to Stubby (and me) was being saved by the grace of God through Jesus. May God bless and comfort the family through this time of significant loss (and celebration of his new life!).
So many memories of Stubby and appreciation for the impact he had on my life and career.
Great man and no dough he touched so many lives. He was a man that you listened to and one who took responsibility for his actions...I will miss him.
I've been wondering just how many tools are checked out to him at ANO...

Stubby and I worked closely together in Operations Training at Palo Verde. He cared deeply about the success of the new operators in training. He held very high standards and wanted the best Operator for the plant. He was a straight shooter and very hard worker. He had a big heart and was passionate about his work and his family. Prayers to his family in this difficult time. Stubby will be missed.
i loved Stubby for his brutal honesty and high standards. He was passionate and you always knew what he stood for. Been years since i talked with him but he will always be a fond memory.
Rest easy Sailor will meet again on Fiddlers Green.
I’m so sorry to hear of Ray’s passing. Such a good soul!
Praying blessings of love, peace, and comfort for you all.
Stubby was my first Shift Manager @ ANO in 1992. We both served on the USS Flasher SSN-613, him serving ~10 years before me. Stubby was influential in my development as a Nuclear Professional. One enduring memory: while he accompanied me on rounds as a soon-to-be-qualified AO, he implored me to not focus on things at eye level, but to “look upâ€. So I guess he told me 28 years ago how I could see him now! God Speed Shipmate. “Rest your oars, we have the watch...†- Skip Melvin
Rest in peace my friend you have had a hard life.
Pleasure working on your shift for several years at ANO. Many memories in the control room.

Well, I can tell you one thing. You just don't forget a guy like Stubby Rust. He was a good man, honest and a man with integrity. I was so happy to see that he and Dena made such a good team and were happy together. Life wasn't always easy but this man was not one to give up. I can think back and remember several memories, but my favorite one was the day he walked into my office in the Unit 2 Control Room and said "Max guess what happened to me last Sunday". I got saved. Music to my ears for sure.
We are so sorry for for your loss. I’m glad we will be able to walk the streets of Glory with him. Prayers for the family.
Prayers for family
Dena, I am so sorry about your wonderful loving husband. I have been praying for you and your children during this most difficult time. May God's best blessings spread a shadow over all of you. Call me some time if you ever need or want to talk.
My heartfelt prayers and condolences to the family and friends of Stubby. He was such a genuine soul who selflessly served others. I first met Stubby at PV when I worked in Emergency Preparedness. He came to my rescue numerous times to assist with scenario accuracy and validity. Stubby’s PV family will miss him tremendously. Fair winds and following seas sir! We have the helm. ðŸ™ðŸ»ðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸
He was the most straightforward direct and principled man I have ever known. I was lucky enough to have him as a mentor during my career in operations. And, am especially proud and honored to have had him as a friend.
