Charlotte Gay Lane

of Leslie, AR

June 29, 1922 - September 5, 2020

Charlotte Gay (Phillips) Lane, age 98 of Leslie, Arkansas passed from this life on Saturday, September 5th, 2020 at her home. She was born in Kerens, Texas on June 29th, 1922 to Clyde Oklahoma Phillips and Cleo Belle (Smith) Phillips, where she grew up and graduated from High School. She was the first child and only daughter of their five children. Her brothers, Clayton, Bernard, Eugene and Truman along with her parents have all preceded her in death.

Charlotte was also preceded in death by her husbands, William Dean Morgan, James Walter Merritt and Joseph Foy Lane.

Survivors include all four of her children, Joyce Brewer, Eva Harrell, Waymon Morgan and Ann Stroud; twelve grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren; and fifteen great-great grandchildren.

Charlotte lived in Houston, Texas most of her life and worked as a beautician for twenty-two years, retiring at the age of sixty. She loved to travel. She enjoyed taking bus tours all over the United States. On one of these trips, one man was always late getting back to the bus. Charlotte, being a bit mischievous, bought a cow bell and had the tour director put it around the neck of the last person getting on the bus. The man was never late again. Charlotte took several cruises. She loved telling about one of her trips to Hawaii when she was on stage and kissed Don Ho. The group she traveled with took a vacation to a foreign country each year. Some of the places she visited included Italy, Greece, Jerusalem, Germany, Austria, Holland, England and Scotland. She always had fun. Besides enjoying the historic buildings and country side, she always found a little more to do, like-Riding a camel, Crawling into a Cannibal pot, Posing in giant Dutch clogs and seeing her friend baptized in the River Jordan. Charlotte moved to Leslie, Arkansas in 2010 to live with her daughter. She soon began to volunteer and enjoyed meeting new friends at the Searcy County Senior Center in Marshall. She even won ribbons in the Senior Olympics. She also loved to quilt on Monday at the Methodist Church in Leslie. She was always eager to play Bingo at the Oxley Community Center when the EHC sponsored fund raisers. She loved to crochet and won ribbons at the Searcy County Fair. She also donated crocheted caps to the Children's Hospital in Little Rock. Charlotte was friendly, quick witted and never met a stranger. Everyone that met her loved her.

Visitation will be 6:00 till 8:00 PM Wednesday, September 9th, 2020 at Roller-Coffman Chapel in Marshall, Arkansas. Charlotte will then be transported to Brookside Memorial Cemetery in Houston Texas for a graveside service at 10:00 AM Friday, September 11th, 2020 with Pastor Alan Keith of Unity Baptist Church officiating. A visitation will be held 9:00 till 10:00 AM preceding the service at Brookside Memorial Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Mike Morgan, Edward Stroud, Shane Stroud, Greg Brewer, Phillip Brewer and Wade Callan.

Only one Mother, hundreds of stars in the pretty sky, hundreds of bees in the purple clover, hundreds of birds that go singing by, "But only one Mother in the whole world over."

Our condolences to the family. Charlotte has been a longtime friend. Her family was the deciding factor of our moving to Leslie. She was always so spry and jovial around us. Remember her coming to our house and pushing me off the riding lawn mower so she could get on it and mow awhile. She would come to our house and help pick green beans and peel tomatoes for Joyce and I to can. We will surely miss her and her smart comebacks to all of us. Loved her and called her our MOM!

This is the first time I have ever heard her first name. She always had a big smile on her face and she was also very nice. She sure was pretty to be 98. I am very sorry to hear that she has passed.
