Joe Olds Williams

of Memphis, TN

April 30, 1956 - February 1, 2019

Joe Olds Williams passed in peace at the age of 62, on February 1, 2019. He was at his home at Trezevant Manor in Memphis, Tennessee where his last weeks were filled with endless visits, calls, and cards from friends and family. Joe was born April 30, 1956 to Mary (Cullom) and Anderson H. Williams, Jr. in Shelbyville, Illinois and grew up in Wilson, Arkansas along with his three brothers, Andy, Charles, and Jerry. His childhood was spent roaming the cotton fields surrounding the large stucco house that had been his grandfather's and then his mother's home. He was welcomed by everyone on the farm. Sharecroppers, farm hands, shop mechanics, and aunts and uncles were included in his daily ramblings and he often shared conversations over a piece of pie, a bowl of beans, or a cool glass of water. After graduating from Rivercrest High School, Joe attended Arkansas State University on a full athletic scholarship as a student trainer for the ASU Football Team. After graduating from ASU in 1978, he embarked on a 35-year career at Southwire, a local manufacturing facility. He began as staff accountant, then Plant Manager, and finally Sales Manager. As Joe advanced within the company, he built a local workforce that successfully transitioned into an international sales division as Southwire became Algonquin and finally REA. Joe is preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother Andy. He is survived by his brothers, Charles and Jerry, his sisters in law Robin Chappell Williams, Elaine Engster Williams, and Joy Carrigan Williams, his favorite aunt, Mary Francis Cullom, and an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins, and their children.

I Meet Joe when he came to Asu in 1974. Joe came into the football complex, we thought he was a new coach the way he acted and dressed🤔. Found out he was only 18 and a freshman student trainer. It didn’t take long for Joe to gain every football player and coaches respect for his work ethic. you could always count on several things from Joe. He had a pipe, whiskey case and cards along with his stock exchange newspapers🤔. Most of the time on football road trips the other team and coaches thought he was the Asu coach the way he dressed the suits along with his hat😁. Coach Bull Davidson put a stop to that 😁. Joe we loved you and thank you for all the great memories and always your quick since of humor.

I met Joe while working at Southwire and could have never asked for a better person to work with. Joe was my boss and I had total respect for him. He often talked about the love for his family. He offered me me great comfort through some hard times and I will forever be grateful. He had become my friend, too. Bless each of y’all and my love and prayers be with each of you.

What a wonderful friend Joe was to me. From an early age till we were grown he has brought joy to me and my brother every time that we were able to be around him. Life is short and goes by so fast. I'm glad Joe had a great fun surrounded by friends and family.
