of Little Rock, AR
December 9, 1920 - May 23, 2007
Catherine Stewart Blunt, 86, went to be with her Father in Heaven on May 23, 2007. A product of a strong Scottish heritage from her parents William and Agnes Stewart, she lived on the South Side of Chicago most of her life. In 1999, she moved to Little Rock to be near the loving family of her daughter, Jan Sherman, and her husband, Doug. In the last years, she was also compassionately cared for by Michelle Lopes and the devoted staff of Briarwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Growing up during the Depression years, Catherine learned the meaning of hope and a smile in the face of adversity. It was a lesson she had to apply time and again throughout her life, which made her resilient to the end with a smile for everyone around her. She married Ray Blunt, Jr., at the outset of World War II, and waited five years for his return from the Far East where he served with the First Marine Division, engaging in numerous island battles and earning two Purple Hearts. She raised two children, Jan and Ray, III, in the traditional manner of a mom at home, which was her calling and her joy. She was also active in the PTA, Girl Scouts, and as a hospital volunteer and a member of Foster Park Baptist Church. Later, she worked in real estate for several years. She was known for her dramatic auburn-haired good looks, as well as her passionate commitment to Christian beliefs, Republican politics, and giving away untold numbers of her special loaves of banana nut bread to those who needed a bit of cheer.
Catherine is survived by her two children and their spouses: Jan and Doug, and Ray and B.J. Blunt of Mount Vernon, Virginia; her five grandchildren and their spouses: Jason and Katie Sherman of Beirut, Lebanon; Matt and Kayla Sherman and Jennie and Justin Jaksha of Little Rock; Robin and Dean Luckenbaugh of Richmond, Virginia; and Matt and Sheryl Blunt of Sterling, Virginia. Five great grandchildren also survive her: Rachel, Joshua and Jacob Luckenbaugh and Carissa and Audrey Blunt, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A private burial service will be held at Pinecrest Memorial Park on Saturday, May 26, 2007, followed by a memorial service at 4:30 p.m. in the Roller-Chenal Funeral Home Chapel, (501)224-8300.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Catherine's name may be made to the World Vision Emergency Aid Fund, World Vision, Inc., P. O. Box 70172, Tacoma, Washington 98481-0172.
