Dorothea Penn Allphin Sudduth

of Little Rock, AR

May 16, 1910 - December 14, 2006

Dorothea Penn Allphin Sudduth, 96, of Little Rock, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 14, 2006. Adored daughter of Jennie Penn and Winfield Scott Hancock Allphin, she was born May 16, 1910, in Scott County, Kentucky. A precocious student, Dorothea graduated from Georgetown College, Georgetown, Kentucky, at age twenty and continued her studies in mathematics at Columbia University. She taught in several locations, including Pikeville, Kentucky and the University of Oklahoma. A loyal Kentuckian, she married Solon Bluch Sudduth in 1935 and moved to Arkadelphia, AR, where he coached at Henderson. After several other moves, they settled in Nashville, Tennessee, where she lived for fifty years.

While in Nashville, she participated and held leadership positions in many organizations, including Peabody Women's Club, Centennial Club, Belmont Aid, Overton Hills Garden Club, YWCA, Baptist Women's Missionary Society, Hermitage Aid, while providing enthusiastic support for the activities of her husband and their children. Evidence of her selflessness was her decision to move to Parkway Village in Little Rock to be near her daughter. There she made many new friends and continued her passion for ''a good game of bridge.''

She exhibited her love for the Lord throughout her life. A Southern Lady, Dorothea accomplished much through the ''velvet hammer'' approach-soft on the outside, with a determination of steel within. Mama S. dearly loved not only her children, but also her grandchildren and great-grandchildren-and her many friends. She enjoyed, not only bridge, but also country ham [Kentucky], race horses [Kentucky], bourbon [Kentucky], basketball, football, tennis, good books, crossword puzzles, chicken livers, and a good white wine.

Dorothea was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her grandson, Andrew Hancock Sudduth. She is survived by her son, Solon Scott Sudduth [Gail], daughter, Susan Sudduth Dodson Hiller [Charles], grandchildren Penn [Elton] Dodson, Jennifer [Paul] Walsh, Robert [Jean], Matthew [Anne] and Ruth Sudduth, and great-grandchildren Zoe, Sophie, Katie, Ben, Ella and Claire Sudduth, Cameron, Henry and Liam Walsh, and Katie Dodson; as well as Wilda Dodson and Bill Hudgins. The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Parkway Village and especially to those at the HealthCenter, and to Drs. Claudia Tolleson and Ira Gershner.

Funeral Service will be 2:00 PM, Sunday, December 17, 2006 at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home, (501)224-8300, with Reverend Glynn Hill and Reverend Karen Akin officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Nashville, Tennessee. Family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.
