Joseph Thomas Smith, 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Willowbend Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Marion, AR. He was born in Houston, MS, on August 17, 1936, to Eugene and Lula White Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, David, Franklin, Paul, and Silas; and his sisters, Rachel Tunnell and Ruth Randall.
Joseph graduated from Pentecostal Bible Institute in Tupelo, MS. He faithfully served in various roles in the churches he attended, most notably as a longtime Sunday School Director a role in which he truly excelled. He had a deep passion for Tupelo Children's Mansion, Lighthouse Boys Ranch, and missions. Professionally, Joseph spent most of his career in the transportation industry, beginning with the railroad and later transitioning into trucking as a dispatcher.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara; sons Gary (Renee) of Dallas, TX, and Stephen (Lorrie) of Olive Branch, MS; seven grandchildren: Garison (Jacqueline), Sydney, Mackenzie, Chandler, Landry, Clancy, and Colyer; and four great-grandchildren: Eleanor, Lyla, Alexandra, and Savanna. He is also survived by one sister, Becky Gates of Sierra Vista, AZ, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He leaves behind a tremendous spiritual legacy, evident in the lives of his children and grandchildren.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to all the friends and caregivers who supported and loved Joe in his final years.
