James Irby Hickman

James Irby Hickman of Conway, Arkansas, passed away on June 26, 2025. He a was born on October 19, 1933 in Conway. Although he first grew up in Union County his family moved back to Conway in time for him to begin elementary school, graduating Conway High School in 1952. He graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College (now UCA) in 1957, and in 1960 he graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a Masters Degree. He began a teaching and coaching career in Paris, Arkansas for one year and returned to Conway as a teacher, coach and administrator. Later he became a purchasing agent with the Arkansas Department of Health.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Luther Hickman and Ora Irby Hickman and his wife Anne Halter Butler. He is survived by two sons, Seth Hickman and Jamie Hickman.

Jim enjoyed playing dominoes, hunting, fishing, exploring game trails in the Ozark mountains. In retirement he rode four wheelers and motorcycles. His Goldwing, took him all over the state and to Key West and Alaska. Those that knew him knew he loved the Razorbacks and the UCA Bears. He frequently tailgated making it an all day event.
