Robert Julian Burney, 81, of Conway left this life on September 15, 2023 in Conway. He was born the third son of Woodson P. (Woody) and Antha Wolfe Burney in Little Rock on February 21, 1942.

He attended school in Evant, TX, Wooster, AR and Conway, AR; graduating from Conway High School in 1960, where he participated in track and field events and for several years held the CHS record in the mile run (less than 4.5 minutes). He earned a Bachelor's degree from Arkansas State Teachers College and a Masters degree from State College of Arkansas (now UCA). Robert taught English and History at Marked Tree, AR, Greenbrier, AR, Plainview, TX, Pensacola, FL and was guidance counselor at Sylvan Hills High School (Pulaski County) for 11 years. He retired from the transportation department at Faulkner Day School in Conway after 15 years

Robert served in the US Army Reserves and was activated in 1961 during the Bay of Pigs invasion. He was a long time and faithful member of Prince Street Church of Christ in Conway. His interests included hiking Arkansas trails, driving in the Ozarks and reading the Bible and history books, with special interest in Winston Churchill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Tom Burney of Jacksonville AR and a nephew, Patrick Burney of North Little Rock.

He is survived by his brothers, John Burney of Hot Springs, AR and Bill Burney (Judie) of Conway; four nephews, Michael Burney of FL, Keith Burney of Searcy, AR, Steve Burney (Misty) of Beebe, AR and Ken Burney (Renee) of Conway, AR and two nieces, Deborah Peters (Ed) of lrving, TX and Kristin Boone (David) of Greenbrier, AR; a sister-in-law, Bobbie Burney of Jacksonville, AR; 6 great nephews and 4 great nieces. He will also be missed by his church family and special friends at Ed's Bakery and Julie's Sweet Shop in Conway.

Memorial Services will be held at Roller McNutt Funeral Chapel in Conway on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 2:00pm, visitation will be one hour prior with Jason Lankford officiating.

Memorial donations can be made to a church or charity of your choice. Interment will follow the service at Oak Grove Cemetery in Conway.
