Marjorie Coomes Garrett

of Conway, AR

June 12, 1921 - July 12, 2023

Marjorie Coomes Garrett, a dedicated nurse, loving matriarch and devoted Catholic, went to be with the Lord on July 12, 2023. She was a remarkable soul, having celebrated 102 years of a life filled with love, resilience and cherished memories. She was born June 12, 1921 in Evansville, Indiana to Joseph Edgar and Josephine Mary Coomes. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Truitt; grandson, Christopher Cockrum; sister, Lucille Nelson and brother, Eddie Coomes.

After completing nursing school, she married a soldier from Arkansas and left the city life for country living on a small farm. She had 5 children before returning to the nursing field, working at Conway Memorial Hospital from 1964 until 1986. She lit up when she put on her white uniform her favorite part of her job was assisting in the miraculous process of bringing new life into the world. Marjorie's skill and caring touch left an indelible mark on the countless Central Arkansas families she served.

After retiring, Marjorie enjoyed traveling the country from California to Niagara Falls, embracing the wonders of nature and cherishing the friendships formed along the way. She enjoyed reading, bowling and playing card games with her grandchildren. She found solace in her beloved garden, tending to its beauty and finding joy in the vibrant blossoms. Even after surpassing 100 years old, she couldn't resist the urge to weed her flowerbed, a testament to her enduring spirit. Her age never held her down - she lived on her own for the entirety of her life and enjoyed her daily strolls around the neighborhood she called home for decades.

Marjorie leaves behind son, Tom Garrett and wife, Linda of California; daughter, Marilyn Colclasure of Conway; son, Jimmy Garrett and wife, Dona of Holland; daughter, Ann Newman and husband, Rick of Conway; daughter, Jan Hall and husband, Jim of Texarkana and sister, Helen Coomes of Evansville, Indiana. She had 14 grandkids, 22 great-grandkids and seven great-great-grandkids.
