Joe Matt Freeman, age 83, of Subiaco, Arkansas passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023, in Paris, Arkansas.

Joe Matt was born on June 6, 1940 in Subiaco to William "Logan" Freeman and Ella "Lorene" Freeman, both of whom preceded him in death.

He graduated from Scranton High School and married his wife of 63 years, Nelta Elaine Mabry Freeman on July 18, 1959 at Oak Grove Holiness Church. Joe Matt provided for his family in many ways by working for the natural gas drilling industry before becoming a dairy farmer, then becoming a poultry grower for Tyson Foods. He retired from farming and established a small dozer and track hoe service, helping many folks in his community through the years.
In 2001, Joe Matt felt a calling to become an ordained minister in the Baptist faith and he lovingly served as pastor of the Subiaco Freewill Baptist Church, now known as the Subiaco Worship Center for many years.
In his younger days, Joe Matt enjoyed basketball and softball, as well as fishing and rodeos. He was one of the original founders of the L. J. Allen Rodeo Arena in Scranton and he loved seeing young people, especially his three children, compete in rodeos. He was a long-time member of the McKendree Cemetery Board of Directors and served on the Subiaco Crossroads Rural Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Nelta of the home in Subiaco; daughter, Robin and husband, Leon Schluterman; son, Joey and wife, Linda Freeman of Scranton and son, Bryan and wife, Shela Freeman of Subiaco; seven grandsons, Curtis and wife, Niki Schluterman, Neal and wife, April Schluterman, Douglas and wife, Andrea Schluterman, and Wesley Schluterman all of Subiaco, Hasten Freeman of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Bryant Lee Freeman and Megan Evans of Charleston, Arkansas; Dustin Freeman and fiance, Ryan Judd of Fayetteville, North Carolina and one granddaughter, Stephanie Elaine Luttrell of Barling, Arkansas. Joe Matt was a great-grandfather to thirteen-great-grandchildren (six girls and seven boys) all of whom were his pride and joy.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 22 at 10:00 am at the Subiaco Worship Center with Pastor J. D. Swaim officiating. Burial will follow at McKendree Cemetery in Subiaco under the direction of Roller Funeral Home.
