Gloria Carter

of Memphis, TN

September 26, 1934 - April 17, 2022

Gloria Dorothy Carter was born in Flint, Michigan, on September 26, 1934, to Batistta and Mary Capello, Italian immigrants who arrived in the United States in the early twentieth century.

She attended Flint Northern High School from which she graduated in 1953. After graduation, Gloria worked at Ternstedt in Flint where she met and then married the love of her life Doyle E. Carter, a ''southern boy'' from De Valls Bluff, Arkansas on August 21, 1954. They continued to live in Flint for a short while where their first child, a son, was born.

In 1955 they moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where Doyle worked as an Air Traffic Controller. For ten years they lived in Indianapolis, Indiana, where two of their three daughters were born. In 1965 Gloria and Doyle moved to Memphis, Tennessee, and three years later their fourth child was born. Gloria was blessed with the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom and she was so very proud of her four beautiful children. After her children had grown up, she experienced empty nest syndrome and decided to go to work for Union Planters Bank in midtown Memphis. In only a few short years, Gloria was promoted to head teller and discovered that she had a real talent for banking. She loved her new career and developed into an excellent leader. Gloria was very successful in her position at the bank.

In 1978 Gloria and Doyle moved to Marion, Arkansas. Gloria continued to work at a local bank in West Memphis, Arkansas where she served as a branch manager. She retired in 1998 after losing her husband of 43 years to brain cancer. A few months later, Gloria returned to the workforce and enjoyed her position at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home in West Memphis for the next ten years until she finally retired for good.

Gloria loved music. She was an excellent pianist and vocalist, and she grew up accompanying her seven older sisters as they all sang and harmonized to their favorite songs. Gloria also sang in several church choirs for most of her adult life. Gloria became a member of the Marion United Methodist Church and an active participant in their church choir. She never missed a Wednesday night rehearsal and looked forward every year to the Christmas and Easter cantatas, her favorite times of the year. Gloria could often be found working crossword puzzles, reading mystery novels, watching any and every sport on television, especially college football, and she never missed an episode of Blue Bloods. But more than anything, Gloria was so proud of her family and enjoyed the many large family gatherings and dinners they shared in her home in Marion. Just ask anyone in the Carter family, ''Who makes the best Thanksgiving dressing in the world?'' After a wonderful and blessed life, Gloria Carter went to be with the Lord on April 17, 2022, at the age of 87.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven sisters, and her husband Doyle. She is survived by her son Dr. Michael Carter of Fayetteville, AR (Babs), her three daughters Sandy Meyers of Farmington, AR (Jim), Dianna Hanks of Marion, AR (Don), and Nancy Jones of Tyler TX (Chris). She also leaves behind ten grandchildren: Brian Carter of Fayetteville, GA (Amanda), Erin Forro of Seattle, Washington (Nick), Megan Kumpe of Fayetteville, AR (Chad), Jacob Meyers of Rogers, AR (Melissa), Chase Meyers of Greenwood, AR (Shawna), Mallory Cupples of Marion AR (Adam), Trent Hanks of Memphis, TN (Leah), Brittney Haynie of Memphis, TN (Sam), Carter Anne Jones of Honolulu, HI, and Christopher Jones of Tyler, TX She also leaves behind 18 great-grandchildren who affectionately called her ''Grandma C''.
