of Little Rock, AR
September 3, 1933 - March 5, 2022
Margaret Ann Carlton Brooks passed away peacefully on March 5, 2022. She was born in Winchester, TN September 3, 1933, the daughter of Cam Roy and Sally Jane Carlton. Margaret is preceded in death by her parents and two sons, David Scott Brooks and Gregory Lyndon Brooks.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Carl Brooks; daughter Karen Simpson (Jim); daughter-in-law Jill Brooks; brother Roy Carlton of Jonesboro, AR; grandchildren Caitlin West (Andrew), Chris Brooks (Taylor) and Allison Brooks of Edmond, OK, Matt Brooks and Ben Brooks of Dallas, TX; great grandchildren Charlie and Ellie West and Turner Brooks.
Margaret graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1952 where she played basketball, was a drum majorette in the band and was homecoming queen. In the summer of 1951, she decided to ask Carl (a college freshman) on a date to a church hayride. On June 14,1953 they were married in Biggers, AR.
After graduation, she worked at radio station KPOC in Pocahontas until she married and moved to Little Rock. In Little Rock she worked for Frank Lyon Company until they moved back to Pocahontas to take over the family business. In 1960 they returned to Little Rock where they would raise their family. After the children started to school, Margaret went to work for Worthen Bank where she became an Assistant Vice President in Lending. She loved her work at the bank and made life-long friendships with co-workers and her customers. Our family has had many people tell us they would not be where they are today without Margaret helping them through school with student loans. After 33 years at the bank, she retired and became a full-time grandmother. She said being a grandmother was the best job she ever had. She adored her grandchildren.
At an early age Margaret and her brother Roy, together, made a profession of faith and accepted Lord Jesus Christ as their savior at the First Baptist Church of Pocahontas. A few weeks later, Margaret, Roy and their mother were baptized in a creek out on Maynard Road. She has remained a Baptist and raised her three children at Tyler Street Baptist Church. She is currently a member of First Baptist Church in Little Rock. She spent many years rocking babies in the nursery, helping with Vacation Bible School and volunteering in the kitchen on Wednesday evenings until her health prevented it.
