Dortha Mae Hayward

of Scranton, AR

August 29, 1929 - February 2, 2022

Dortha Mae Hayward, 92, of Scranton, Arkansas passed away, Wednesday, February 2, 2022 in Clarksville.

Dortha was born to her parents, Carl and Annie Newman Gray on August 29, 1929. She was the oldest child of 4 and grew up helping on the farm and taking care of her younger siblings. She said she always wanted to go with her Dad to the feed mill so she could pick out the ''feed sacks'' that her next dress would be sewed from. Dortha's greatest love as an adult was caring for her family and making a warm, nurturing home for the children and grandchildren she raised. She helped her husband with a garden each spring and summer, and upon harvest she would can and freeze until she had put away plenty to feed the family all through the winter. She was an amazing seamstress who made all her girls' dresses for many years--even making her own patterns out of newspaper when she saw a style in a catalog that she wanted to recreate.

Dortha was preceded in death by her parents mentioned above; her husband of 71 years, Eugene Hayward; two brothers, Riley Gray and Joe Gray and one sister, Annetta Ford.

She is survived by her two daughters, Donna Henderson and husband, Jimmy Allen and Janet Grissom and husband, Paul both of Scranton; one son, Terrence Hayward and wife, Diana of Kibler, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Liz Needham Porter, Jeff Henderson, Scott Henderson, Michelle Hayward, Chris Stovall and Erin Stovall; ten great grandchildren; other family members and friends.
