Brooxie Nell Karns

of Marshall, AR

November 7, 1919 - September 9, 2021

Brooxie Nell Karns, age 101 of Marshall, Arkansas passed from this life on Thursday, September 9th, 2021 at Highland Court in Marshall, Arkansas. She was born in Searcy County, Arkansas on November 7th, 1919 to William Mitchell Heard and Gladys Muriel Hensley Heard.

Brooxie attended the First Christian Church as long as her health allowed. Her main interest in life was her relationship with her King, prayer, and bringing others to Christ. During her lifetime, she played the piano at church for 81 years, only ceasing due to failing eyesight. She taught Sunday School and gladly counseled anyone who needed guidance. She truly loved others unconditionally. Brooxie was very civic-minded and active in many community activities including the EH Club, the Searcy County Historical Society, the Searcy County Republican Women's organization. She wrote the Marshall column for the Marshall Mountain Wave for many years, reporting on the comings and goings of her activities and visitors. Early in her adult life, Brooxie taught school, not being much older than some of her students during those years. She was a dedicated member and officer in the Order of the Eastern Star, holding many offices including Worthy Matron. Brooxie had a kind and giving personality. Living in town, there was always a yard full of children playing at her house, and she absolutely loved it. She always had something cooking on the stove or baking in the oven. She delighted in cooking for family and friends. No one ever left her kitchen hungry. She was happy to share recipes and teach others how to make her specialties. Brooxie had an extremely green thumb and could make anything grow and bloom. Her love of irises was well known, hydrangeas were another favorite. Cats were an important part of her life, she adored them and always had several around to love and cuddle. Brooxie was a proud graduate of the Marshall High School Class of 1936 and attended every MHS Alumni Banquet that she could in her lifetime, never missing a single one. She was a charitable soul, supporting multiple causes both local and national. Toward the end of her days, she charmed those around her by wearing tiaras when dressing up for special occasions. She was simply a grand, interesting, and irreplaceable lady.

Brooxie is survived by Bill McEntire and his wife Janie, of Marshall; Madison McEntire and his wife Crissy, of Bryant; Amy McEntire and her husband Michael Harris, of Marshall; Mackenzie Shelton and her husband Dakota, of Benton; Will McEntire of Fayetteville; Linda Gail Dillahunty of Sugarland, Texas; Ron Williams of Boulder, Colorado; Cheryl Strang of Phoenix, Arizona; Marilyn Wild and husband Bob of Phoenix, Arizona; and a host of great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
