George William Allison

of Jonesboro, AR

October 11, 1929 - April 10, 2021

George William Allison, age 91, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2021.

He was born in Egypt, Arkansas, on October 11, 1929, to Cleo and Gussie (Allison) Allison. They and his sister, Connie Brown, preceded him in death. He married Frances (Van Hooser) on December 6, 1949. They were married 71 years. In addition to her, he is survived by their four children: Steve Allison (Dorothy), Collierville, Tennessee; Ron Allison, Dallas, Texas; Paula Shaver, San Antonio, Texas; and Tim Allison (Linda), Jonesboro, Arkansas; nine grandchildren: Rob, Sam, Rich, Marcus, Josh, Nick, Rachel, Derek, and Seth; and eight great grandchildren.

He was a Church of Christ minister known throughout northeast Arkansas. His many friends know him by the names "George", "G.W.", and "Chick". He was raised in Pocahontas where at age nine, he nearly drowned in Mansker Creek. Later, he returned to be baptized at Mansker Creek and also performed his first baptism at the site. He declined a football scholarship at Arkansas State University to study the ministry at Harding University. Between terms, while working in Michigan, he met his wife, Frances Van Hooser. The couple served several congregations in Oklahoma and Michigan from 1951-1958, before returning permanently to Arkansas where they worked with churches in Pocahontas, Rector, Searcy, Corning, Nettleton, Lepanto, and lastly Egypt for over 50 years.

He was the original host and frequent speaker for "Speaking the Truth in Love" on KAIT-TV. He held over 350 gospel meetings across the eastern U.S. and officiated well over 1,000 funerals in Northeast Arkansas. George baptized a similar number in baptistries, creeks, and rivers. George truly believed each human being is a precious child of God and is special. This belief informed many of his experiences, which involved thousands of hospital visits, integrating his church in the 1960's, and mission trips to the Ukraine.

George was noted for his passion and accomplishments in athletics. He was voted Most Valuable Player on his high school football team, achieved All-State in basketball, and started for the Jonesboro American Legion baseball team that included eventual major league star, Wally Moon. He was a beloved Little League baseball coach, always bringing out the best in the young athletes with his enthusiasm and positive style. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan.

George was a loving husband, a dedicated father, and a true friend to countless people. His funeral will be held Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Valley View Church of Christ. Visiting hours will be from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm, with a service beginning at 3:00 pm.
