of Maumelle, AR

May 21, 1927 - April 6, 2021

Bernard ''Barney'' Sahene, 93, of Maumelle, Arkansas passed away on April 6, 2021. Barney was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Susan and Leo Sahene.

On August 21, 1948, Barney married the love of his life, Margurite Smeltz. They celebrated 73 wonderful years of marriage together. Barney and Margurite raised six children; Bernadette Hurst, Carole Derby, Phil Sahene, John Sahene, Jim Sahene and Lisa Hamilton.

Barney is survived by his wife, Margurite; brother, Emmanuel Sahene, sisters; Vera Zikmund; Margaret Devore and Helen Bozik, all six children, Bernadette and Don Hurst; Carole and Allen Derby; Phil and Donna Sahene; John and Ruth Sahene; Jim and Paula Sahene and Lisa and Ben Hamilton; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Barney lived an extraordinary life. He was very dedicated to his country, family, community and church.

Barney served in the US Army during World War II. In addition to serving his country, he was very proud of the American Flag. In fact, anyone who visited his home on Braeswood Place in Maumelle could clearly see the flag hanging proudly in front of his home. He even convinced many of his neighbors to do the same, thus causing Braeswood Place to became known as the street of flags thanks to his devotion to and pride for his country.

Barney was certainly the patriarch of his family. His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren loved and admired him. He was always quick to give advice and provide guidance and help to anyone in his family.

Barney also loved his community. He was always willing to talk with anyone and made friends with everyone he met. He served as President of the Maumelle Country Club for a number of years. He also volunteered with Hope Alliance in Maumelle where he helped give food to those in need. On Sundays, Barney would bring flowers to the residents of Audubon Pointe to brighten their day.

Barney and Margurite are members of the First United Methodist Church of Maumelle and have been for over thirty years. They spent many years growing close relationships with other members of the church and contributed where they saw the need.

Visitation will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Maumelle on Tuesday, April 13th at 10 AM. Funeral services will follow at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you send any donations to First United Methodist Church, 1201 Edgewood Drive, Maumelle, Arkansas 72113.
