Born in Cairo, Illinois, Al Witt was the second son of Jay Jeffrey Witt and Evelyn Elizabeth nee Whidden. After completing high school there, Al attended Murray State College in Kentucky, where he met his future wife Barbara Jean Foster. He completed his undergraduate work, joined the U.S. Marines and married Barbara. The couple would have four children. Following military service which took him from California to Florida, Al and Barbara moved to Memphis where Al went to Dental School at the University of Tennessee. In addition to taking his degree in Dentistry, Al also completed a Master of Science. For the remainder of the 1960s and all of the 1970s, Al and Barbara made their home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Following a divorce, Al sold his Tulsa dental practice and took a job working for a firm that provided medical care on military bases in Saudi Arabia. For the following two decades, Al and his second wife, Betty Jean Dodd Witt (-2014) worked in Tabuk and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In the late 1990s, Al retired from dentistry and moved to Memphis, where Betty had family. He and Betty lived in Memphis until 2011 when Betty's son, Stacy Dodd, of Southaven, Mississippi, invited the couple into his home with his wife Stephanie. They were living in retirement there when Betty passed away in 2014. Stacy and Stephanie continued to care for Al during his last years.
In his eighty-seven years, Alfred Witt led a full and happy life. He was many things to many people: devoted son and brother, aspiring artist and athlete, a marine, a dentist, husband, father and stepfather, a professed Christian and a Republican. Al was also a lifelong dog aficionado, from his chihuahuas, Tippy and Tammy, to the Shih Tzus of his later years, Romeo and Luke. Wherever Al Witt was, his dog was always close by. Though he died less than three hours by car from the place of his birth, Dr. A.G. Witt quite literally travelled the world to get there. He will be missed, more than he knew.
