Alfred WebbI am a Veteran.

of Mountain View, AR

July 17, 1925 - September 18, 2020

Alfred Webb of Mountain View died Sept. 18, 2020, at the age of 95.
He was born July 17, 1925 in the Newnata area to Eva Ardell (Roper) and Alford Marcellus Webb. He was the second of six siblings and the only boy. Intended as a ''Junior,'' he never had the designation officially and had no middle name but carried the nickname throughout life.
He attended schools at Red Doors, Fifty Six and Happy Hollow, with seventh grade at Happy Hollow being his last grade completed.
In the early 1940s he hired on to help build Norfork Dam, and he had traveled with a group to work the wheat fields of North Dakota when he received the expected draft notice. He entered the U.S. Navy Oct. 26, 1943, at age 18. He attended boot camp in San Diego, then completed landing craft school. He was assigned to Landing Craft, Vehicle Personnel Crew #5 and made two landings from the USS Virgo, at Guam and at Peleliu (now Palau). He spent the remainder of his service at the Waipio Amphibious Operating Base in Hawaii. He was honorably discharged Jan. 12, 1946 as Seaman First Class.
A few years after he returned from the service he headed north to find work. He also found a wife and family. He married Joanne (Woods) Burr, who already had three boys from her first marriage. They soon began expanding the family, adding four more children between 1957 and 1961.
Al packed up the family and returned to Stone County in 1962, despite jobs still being scarce. The U.S. Forest Service offered the best opportunity and he spent the next 20 years as a federal employee, helping develop Blanchard Springs Recreation Area and Blanchard Springs Caverns, serving in timber stand improvement crews and as a security officer, among other assignments.
He acquired an 89-acre farm in the Pleasant Hill area and moved the family (now with an eighth child) to their third and final location in the county in 1965.
Over the years he earned a reputation as hard-working, honest, fair and dependable, though he was a stickler for regulations and butted heads frequently. He could be counted on to fight for what he believed was right, such as his sons growing their hair long if they wished, the school system operating according to state law, or the city modifying non-handicapped-accessible sidewalks.
After retirement he pursued an interest in buying and selling goods and he and his wife operated Webb's Antiques on Main Street into the early 1990s.
Al and Joanne moved into town in 2001 and Al viewed staying active as a job, first driving to the park or the courtsquare to walk laps, but eventually making the trek from Oak Grove Street to Lancaster's Store with his walker most every day.
He moved into assisted living after his health declined in 2020, and he had been at The Waters of Mountain View nursing home since July.
He leaves seven children: Karl Burr of Louisiana, Andy Burr (Sara) of Florida, Jan Misenheimer (Gary) of Mountain View, Frances Webb (Wayne Jackson) of Mountain View, James Webb (Vanessa) of Mountain View, David Webb of Florida, and Lori Freeze (Michael) of Mountain View; along with 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Sisters Hazel Scott of Mountain View, Maxine Lee of Mountain View, Georgia Hudson of Illinois and Betty Repp of Alabama also survive him, along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
His wife Joanne, son Greg Burr, sister Mildred Webb, and grandson Erik Misenheimer preceded him in death.
A graveside memorial service will be held Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. at Red Door Cemetery. Everyone is encouraged to participate and share favorite stories. Family will be available beginning at 1 p.m. for those who wish to bring lawn chairs and visit.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Red Door Cemetery Fund at Centennial Bank, Stone County Honor Guard (1918 Ridge Rd., Mtn. View), or Stone County Historical Society (P.O. Box 210).
