Charles R. Owen

of Maumelle, AR

August 29, 1934 - September 4, 2020

Charles R. Owen, of Maumelle, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on September 4, 2020 at the age of 86. Charles was born August 29, 1934 in Palmyra, Arkansas. He graduated from Pine Bluff High School then attended Arkansas Tech, where he earned a BA in Business administration, and the University of Arkansas, where he earned an MBA in Accounting. After graduation, he served his country in Korea as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army.

Known for his creativity he made his living as a true entrepreneur, constantly inventing new products and business concepts and was the holder of several registered patents. Perhaps he is best known as the inventor and CEO of Charlie-O, a make-it-yourself home soda system that was enjoyed by thousands of families in the early 80's.

Preserving part of the history of the state that he loved so much, Charles was the developer of the Little Rock Train Station restoration in 1979 where he supervised the redesign, construction and restoration of this landmark, which at the time was the largest historical restoration project in Arkansas.

Perhaps his most significant accomplishment was achieved in 1967 when he worked for Litton Business Systems in Boston and received a Letter of Commendation for designing and installing the first major hospital computer source data system in the United States. Charles also achieved much success in real estate development projects including the purchase, development and sale of the VA Medical Center in 1992.

Charles married Ann Owen, the love of his life, in 1958 and they shared the joy of a 62-year marriage. They settled in Little Rock in 1967 where they raised 3 children. He was an avid sports fan, never missing a Razorback broadcast and enjoyed playing tennis and golf. His main joy however, was spending time with his extensive family that he loved so much.

Charles is survived by his wife, Ann Owen; his three children: Jenni Gatlin, Greg Owen and Matt Owen; his 9 grandchildren: Owen Handloser, Brad Handloser, Matthew Gatlin, Lindsey Owen, Annie Covington, Connor Owen, Carley Owen, Charlie Gatlin and Luke Gatlin; his 6 great grandchildren: Layla, Abby, Samantha, Ethan, Oakley and Benny; and his 2 brothers: James Owen and Larry Owen.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Mr. & Mrs. James Edison Owen and his sister Ruby Box.

A funeral mass will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church on September 10 followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery. Due to COVID-19 attendance is limited to immediate family only.
